  1. Morning Christof Lucky boy enjoy it when you get it. There has always been and always will be debates on fuel and these days I guess people will fill up at the cheapest station particularly in todays climate plus now we have E10 fuels as well.. My 4.6is has covered 160k at 92k I rebuilt the engine due to the plastic chain guides failing. The car has always been run on regular with a tank of premium every 5th fill up, there is a fair mix of Supermarket brands in there as well. When I stripped the engine the OEM honing marks were still clearly visible in the bores and there was very little carbon build up, which is a testament to the quality of modern fuel and oils. At the rebuild I upgraded the cam and throttle body with Dinan items from the States and a remap to gain the best use of them. Now at 160k a month ago I had the old girl on a rolling road she showed 363hp at the wheels, average mpg has always been between 18 and 19mpg. I am old but I don't drive like Miss Daisies chauffeur winter the car gets plenty of mild off road use and tows a horse trailer most summer weekends A bit of a long winded way of saying give it the best you can I think oil changes at a minimum once a year are more important THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS ENJOY YOUR BEEMER Dave
  2. Morning Martin Welcome to the Forum A diagnostic scan is needed using something like INPA or BMW 1.4.0 as your issue could be with 1 or more of the system components or a failing LCM If you are a DIY person then I would get a copy of BMW 1.4.0 which you can load onto a Laptop. iI is simple to use and will give Dealer level access and information all scan information is in English so no codes to interpret. If the fault is with one of the units then it can be repaired (Google) or replaced. Today there are several replacement systems available that are in fact cheaper than the OEM equipment. If however it is the LCM failing a replacement can be sourced and contrary to BMW coded to your car (BMW 1.4.0) Dave
  3. Morning Teresa A BMW specific Scan tool such as INPA/ISTA or BMW 1.4.0 will allow you to see and investigate all control modules individually. Because of the configuration often faults in one will throw faults with others as they share information. A recent scan on my own X5 using BMW 1.4.0 showed a DME fault Mass Air Flow. Solution New one fitted a Fault with the Auxiliary Water Pump. Pump tested fine earth issue found and fixed. PDC fault rear center right sensor (As I have a reverse camera not yet fixed) All descriptions are as shown on the fault screen so no guess work or code interpretation. Dave
  4. Morning Martin That sounds like a loose connection or faulty loom particularly if it is random. Lots of searching with a multi meter I am afraid? Fingers crossed it is just a loose connector or something similar Dave
  5. Morning Andrew Not that I am aware of What have you checked? Lamp units for corrosion ? Bulbs ? Loom through lower tailgate to body ? Dave
  6. Morning Welcome to the Forum My guess would be the lower steering joints. First try some lubrication on the 2 universal joints if the noise goes you will know where the issue is. It will come back though so think about changing the lower joints look at www.realoem.com put the last 7 digits of your Vin into the search box then look in the steering section. The small exploded drawing should help you see where it is. Good Luck Dave
  7. Morning Sanchez Welcome to the Forum That is an interesting idea, there are a number of things that come to mind that would need consideration. There are I am sure regulations somewhere about how secure the batteries need to be, but that aside How much will extra batteries weigh? I don't know the weight of the battery pack currently in your car but extra weight will effect handling and brakes. I wonder if the current batter pack could be substituted for one with a larger capacity, say 70 kWh increased to 100 kWh I think we need an EV specialist on board here Dave
  8. Hi Teresa I have tried to help with your earlier post So first question What Diagnostic system are you using to scan the car? If it isnt BMW specific you may struggle a BMW specic system will tell you what and where in English not just a code. Next question. When you scan can you identify all the control modules (this may be a failing/failed FCM/LCM) Back to my original answer what condition is the battery in? Dave
  9. Hi Martin Welcome to the Forum When you say defaults to the start of what you were playing are you streaming music through your phone using something like Sptify or CarPlay ? Or are you getting issues with CD or Downloaded music on a memory stick? Dave
  10. Morning Teresa Welcome to the Forum If it's throwing so many codes my first thought is Battery dying particularly if investigation shows the sensor faults to be spurious. Make sure the battery is fully charged minimum 12.8v engine off measured at the charging points under the Bonnet 14.4 +v measured at the same place engine running. Clear all faults then rescan see what comes back. If you have been scanning with the engine off that won't help as it will be draining the battery. Any returning codes can then be investigated Check the battery date code, the battery on my X5 died suddenly, when I checked the battery code after change it was manufactured in Dec 2002 so OEM and 18 when it died 😲 Hope this helps Dave
  11. Hi H Welcome to the Forum Very pretty You have done it now !! Many weekends cleaning and polishing ahead to keep her pristine 🤣 ENJOY Dave
  12. Morning Adam Welcome to the Forum Sorry don't appear to be able to download your attachments With regard to the rattle it could well be timing chain related which was a fairly common problem around your car/year. Sadly as the designers put the chain at the back of the engine it is an engine out job to do all chains upper and lower. Dave
  13. Morning Daniel Sadly I think the bean counters have killed off the days when a full loom was fitted to every car. Check www.realoem if you haven't already, put the last 7 digits of your Vin into the search box it will bring up your model then search the audio section. That will give you an Idea of what to look for plus the small exploded drawings may help Not sure what system you have fitted which may also dictate whether they fitted an amp connection. You could check a Vin de-coder to see what was originally ordered Dave
  14. Morning Only 25 years and the coating rubs off !! 🤣 Seems the only sound solution would be new ones Dave
  15. Morning David Welcome to the Forum If you are going to disconnect the battery make sure you know how to open the boot (trunk) manually first 😆 Not sure if you will lose settings in the car over a 5 or 6 month period, you may have to get the battery re-registered Disconnecting the Battery won't stop it going flat, we have a holiday home where I keep an old estate car, I connect the battery to a Ctec intelligent battery charger the Ctec is plugged into a 7 day timer comes on over night once a week. If the charger see's a full battery it does nothing. Dave
  16. Then I would say your issue is with the Gear selector and inhibitor switch Dave
  17. Morning Craig Pre-heat are the glow plugs and or the glow plug relay. If the mornings are cold that may be the issue but you need a Diagnostic scan to be sure. Have you tried starting in N not P just in case it is the inhibitor switch. Dave
  18. Looks as those should polish up OK is that the second hand set ? Maybe secondhand set and get the originals re-coated Great isnt it bit like the old joke about bus's wait for ages then they all turn up together 🤣 Dave
  19. Hi Nigel Is it the reflectors or the plastic headlamp lens that is the issue? If it is the lens then there are cleaning and polishing kit's and products that may be worth trying first. Dave
  20. Morning Baily Welcome to the Forum Try www.pelicanparts.com it is an American site but apart from the steering wheel being on the wrong side everything else is in the same place. They have some excellent "how too's" with pictures that may help Dave
  21. Morning Paul If you have the part number just Google it and see what comes up Have you tried BMW for a relay ? They have a classic section and offer some excellent discounts to help people keep BMW classics on the road. Also try Schmiedmann they are a BMW specialist that have a great reputation Dave
  22. Morning Hilly Welcome to the Forum If you don't renew your subscription the service should just end. They may send a few "reminder messages" to try and get you to renew but £70 for what? How often have you used it ? If you are one of the folks who have Amazon Alexa in your ? Or have your phone configured as a digital key then you may miss it. I can sit in my drivers seat and push a button or two without moving so for me Alexa is redundant (Alexa is also hackable) Dave
  23. Welcome to the Forum Peter Dave
  24. Morning Nigel Welcome to the Forum# Very nice looking Compact If my old brain is not playing tricks with me the Headlamp units on your car can be dismantled and the reflectors replaced/cleaned Take a look at www.realoem.com put the last 7 digits of your Vin number into the search box, it should bring up your model in the classic section. Then look in the lights section there should be a small exploded drawing with part numbers, once you hace the part numbers then you can Google the best source. Don't forget your local BMW Dealer they offer good discounts on Classic parts Good Luck with the search Dave
  25. Hi Marc Welcome to the Forum Not sure what you are asking here Marc, I know you can get "Back Up with Top View" camera's "Lane Change Warning" and "Surround View" I believe all functions use the same camera. Fortunately it's not as straight forward as just changing the mirrors, as they will need coding to your car assuming the looms and other stuff are in place. BMW will either tell you impossible or will want several body parts as payment 😂 An interesting project I would begin with www.reaoem.com put the last 7 digits of your Vin into the search box it will cal up a parts list for your model the check the vehicle trim section to see if it was an option. In the parts list you will see some thing like S3AHA followed by Yes or No and a Part number in blue this is the part you will need to find. So assuming you don't want to donate a body part or two I would contact the specialist vehicle dismantlers, bet they will still be expensive but nowhere near BMW new cost. Plus you will need someone with ISTA/INPA who can then code them to your chassis, or buy a copy for yourself and mount it on a laptop Good Luck Dave
