  1. Morning Charlie Welcome to the Forum Sounds as though your friend has blown the Diff or a Drive shaft possibly the Prop shaft Not sure what your referring to with "a Pull" if he was trying to tow another car dropping the clutch is the last thing to do as the snatch it caused he could cause serious damage to both cars. But he knows that now!! if it is his Diff it will be expensive as BMW only supply them exchange so even the second hand market charges a premium Dave
  2. Hi Craig As its been off the road and recognising your not mechanically minded (Yet) I would indeed put it in for a service and ask them to give it a pre-MOT inspection so things underneath will get looked at, such as suspension and any chassis issues that may be there and hidden from view. You will need a trusted Independent Garage or perhaps BMW Specialist to help with that There is a Register of BMW Specialists so an Internet search should help you find one within a reasonable distance. Same applies for BMW Specialist Dismantlers there are several so an Internet search should provide you with a list. Use www.realoem.com put the last 7 digits of your Vin into the search box it will call up your model. Then search the trim section it always helps if you have Part Numbers it will also give you a list of any fixings and fasteners I keep a box of spares as plastic clips are easy to break. Once you have the information hunt for best prices with the Dismantlers, don't dismiss BMW they have some good deals on Classic's Good Luck Dave
  3. Morning Craig Welcome to the Forum The BMW straight 6 engine is one of the worlds great engines and capable of Star Ship Enterprise mileages, they are also plentiful so unless originality is high on your list easily changed. The drive train is also tough but often not serviced any where near their requirements so Diff prop and Gearbox will need TLC often first. Suspension bushes will be tired so plan a full refurb. If you are not aware www.realoem.com will help with Part numbers and the small exploded drawings help with how stuff fits. Another useful site is www.pelicanparts.com an American site that has some really great "How To's" with pictures. If you don't have Diagnostic's BMW 1.4.0 is still cheap and will give dealer level access for finding and sorting issues. Hope this helps Dave
  4. Try www.realoem.com put the last 7 Digits of your Vin into the search box. That will bring up your model then search the Trim Section Dave
  5. Hi David Welcome to the Forum First is the battery actually correct for the car (ie same as the original) ? If it isn't that is not helping Check the live terminal and all it's connections particularly the small single wire (battery condition sensor). When a battery is not registered to the chassis it may not charge correctly, if it is an exact replacement sometimes you are OK. Not very often though If you are lucky disconnect the battery (make sure it is correct type and rating for your car) make sure it is fully charged leave the battery disconnected for at least 30min then reconnect. That should reset everything To be certain there is no damage you need a diagnostic check so if you don't have the equipment you will need the help of a mechanic/garage who has you could also get them to register the battery Dave
  6. Hi Ron Welcome to the Forum Take a look at www.realoem.com put the last 7 digits of your Vin into the search box, it will bring up your Model then search the sections for what you need You should find all the trim parts and fasteners and fixings, once you know what it is and the Part Number Google is your friend. Dont dismiss BMW Dealers they can be competitive Dave
  7. Hi Neville Welcome to the Forum If you know the part number it helps but sources will be limited either BMW new = £££ Or there is a register of BMW Dismantlers worth checking them as well I have used Quarry Motors with success in the past Good Luck Dave
  8. Hi Simon Then I guess your budget will dictate Not sure what ISTA/INPA costs today but I would think around £100 at least then you need a laptop to mount it onto plus the cables to connect to the car. I-carsoft and Foxwell I have seen for around £140 but are self contained and from what I have read work well Good Luck Dave
  9. Hi Simon Not heard of E-sys are they a Diagnostic supplier? I use BMW ISTA/INPA which gives me Dealer levels access, what are you trying to code? I ask as certain things which are termed "coding" are just registering to the chassis and several other systems I-carsoft, Foxwell, Autologic are capable of carrying out the registration. Dave
  10. Morning Steve First you have a can of worms so don't take the lid of just yet 🤣 If your replacement is the same part numbers you may be lucky and get a straight swap. If not it may need coding to your chassis (anti theft) for it to work. Plus you could need an activation code from BMW First check realoem to get the correct part numbers for your car It may be less hassle to take your existing unit to someone like Cartronics who have been repairing/upgrading BMW audio systems for years then it would be plug and play Good Luck Dave
  11. Morning Tim Welcome to the Forum Oh Err that is a bit of a weird one and a bit of a worry for you It has to be a faulty switch or possibly a short in the loom I would start with all switches and connectors clean dry and clean with a good electrical contact cleaner then seal the connection (I have had success with plumbers tape) If that doesn't do it check the loom and lock carefully Dave
  12. Morning Ian Welcome to the Forum There are several good you tube videos showing how to reset the I-drive record for service Or there is BMW ISTA which would need mounting onto a Laptop or Carsoft and Foxwell I believe have the capability Good Luck Dave
  13. Morning Leonard Welcome to the Forum I have never had to deal with this but from what I have read this can be caused by (1) a software glitch (2) SOS module failure (3) a bluetooth pairing issue Have you searched to see if there is a Reset sequence available? If not you may need the help of someone with BMW capable diagnostic software to update the software Dave
  14. Morning Clo Welcome to the Forum Often when you have fault codes 1 is the cause the other codes are symptoms. If you aren't aware look at www.realoem.com put the last 7 digits of your Vin into the search box it will bring up your model. Then check the section for what you need if buying parts you will have the correct part numbers. If your driving is over short journey's it is not unusual for the EGR valve to become clogged, the EGR cooler gets over worked and often the spring weakens. So First check all the vacuum lines to the cooler, you can clean and check the cooler (I would replace it) Clean the EGR (use carb cleaner) make sure every thing is working freely. Check and (Replace if needed) the DPF sensors and O2 sensors, if the DPF is clogged/sooted up try getting it cleaned. Good Luck hope this is helpful Dave
  15. Morning Timothy Welcome to the Forum Take a look at www.realoem.com put the last 7 digits of your Vin into the search box it will call up your model then search the sections for what you want (Fuel Preparation) the small exploded drawings should help with location and fitting also the part number (if buying a replacement) Also double click the part number and it will give a list of alternative part numbers and models it was used on. Good Luck Dave
  16. Hi Stu There has to be pressure in the braking system (foot on the brake) before the ABS function can work releasing and reapplying pressure The vehicle needs to be fitted with Active Cruise Control with the Stop/Go function to allow it to brake the car (Stop/Go has an electric servo on the brakes) if Alex's 125i has that then it could be a short affecting it You would expect BMW or a competent Independent to be able to work it out though Dave
  17. Morning Peter Welcome to the Forum I guess your price is from your BMW Dealer ? Not a problem I have ever had to deal with but I did read some time ago about a company "Toponline.com" worth a Google search. Apparently they make roof seals and repair kits. If I recall they are an American based outfit but they seem to have a good reputation You could also look at specialist dismantlers like Quarry Motors Good Luck Dave
  18. Morning Alex Welcome to the Forum If your car has Radar controlled Cruise Control that could apply the brakes if there is a Short Circuit somewhere while the wipers are operating. If you don't have radar cruise control then the Brakes are a separate mechanical system that would not be affected by a short circuit. That leaves a sudden cut in power so back to a short circuit that affects the ignition/fuel injection looms Just my initial thoughts Dave
  19. Welcome to the Forum Dale Dave
  20. Morning Garbz Welcome to the Forum Clearly there is a dead short which will probably be in the loom so tracing it will need some patience My bet will be chaffed or split wiring Have you had any diagnostics run ? Dave
  21. EV's at the moment are I believe where Mobile phones/Laptops where in the early/mid 90's bulkier and heavier then with little life away from a socket to plug into. 🤣 I guess they will get there, or they will need some serious investment in Hydrogen cell technology lets hope the investment is here and not sold off Dave
  22. Morning Michael Welcome to the Forum Like you on several cars not just BMW's I have found several instance's of loom or hoses rubbing or chaffing. I keep of slotted plastic push studs the allow a cable tie to be used to secure stuff. If it looks bad I add a short piece of water pipe insulation, it's surprising how many odd noises its fixed 😅 Dave
  23. With you on the EV front when Tesla themselves quote 40% recycling If you are into home maintenance it will help to get a copy of ISTA/INPA it will have everything you need for Diagnostic's Workshop information Technical information and you can use it on both your Beemers Dave
  24. Morning Richard Welcome to the Forum We love enthusiastic engineers and as the years catch up ( the big 80 is close) you just need to add a couple of new tools to the kit, a couple of younger bendier sons and a really helpful 13 year old Granddaughter who's hands fit where mine no longer seem to 🤣🤣 Nice collection of BMW's ENJOY Dave
  25. Hi Simon The instructions in ISTA are Go to the iDrive navigation. Open the menu. Scroll down to the very bottom and select ‘Software update’. When you’ll see the button ‘show current version’, select it. But that screen looks as though thats where you are your car really isn't playing ball Dave
