  1. Hi Trigger...welcome to the Club

Rolling back is an issue as far as I am concern, especially with a stop/start equipped vehicle or with an electric handbrake.

It depends on how many revs on tickover as to whether the transmission is loaded enough to stop the creeping, otherwise it may just need a software update to change the settings.

Let us know how you get on with this issue.

    Cheers,  Trevor

  2. Hi Graham.....welcome to the Forums

You have a Karmann Ghia?  what a superb car!

There's plenty of choice out there and for the money I would certainly consider a later car with higher miles as Bimmers tend to go on forever once they achieve the higher miles...generally all the issues have been resolved over the years, as long as it has been maintained correctly.

Depends also whether you want Petrol or Diesel and that depends on your regular journeys as I'm sure you want a bigger car (e.g. tourer/estate) and this usually comes with a bigger engine so I would bear this in mind when looking for your new family car.

Let us know how you get on with choosing a Bimmer.

    Cheers,   Trevor

  3. Hi Adam....welcome to the Forum

Sounds like you have a bit of a project to contend with....Dave (GreyDog) is the expert on X5's so I'm sure he can guide you in the right direction.

But throw a few problems out there and we may know some of the answers

    Good to have you onboard

  4. Hi Paul...welcome to the Forums

FIne looking Beemers and the scenery....love a good road trip....especially to the 'Ring.

Good to have you onboard and look forward to reading about the additional mods you are planning.

    Cheers,   Trevor

  5. Hi Richard....welcome to the Forum

That can be really annoying and would drive me mad!

I suppose it is a case of someone trying to hold the dash at various points to ascertain where its likely to be coming from and then securing it with something.

Let us know if you ever get to the bottom of it

    Cheers,   Trevor

  6. Hi Keith...kindred spirit indeed!

I think that anything that can be done to educate drivers to drive better is definitely the way forward....it seems to be that once the test has been passed then that's it regarding learning to drive better.

I wonder how RoSPA differs from IAM...you'll have to let me know the nuts and bolts and I may look to go over to them at some point.

Please feel free to contribute your wisdom and any interesting information regarding driving and associated techniques.
I actually run my own site relating to Driving and Motoring in general and it is also aimed at first time drivers, anyone going abroad and just about anything to do with cars...check it out if you like .  https://www.autoevoke.com

  7. Hi Andrew....welcome to the Forum

There is a thread on this forum that has been running for the past two to three weeks with very similar issues on a 3 series I believe....worth searching for this one as it had very similar information.

In respect of the steering / suspension geometry being misaligned - uneven tyre wear....I would find out why this is as opposed to allowing them to just adjust settings, as this may be the cause for the excess noise (wheel bearings, worn suspension joints, etc).

Let us know how it is all going

    Cheers, Trevor

Greydog - maybe one for you as you are the X5 specialist

  8. Hi Keith....welcome to the Club

I can sense your passion for all things BMW from here!
Track Days are a great opportunity to test out your car's capabilities and it is a shame you don't have anything on your doorstep...the only ones coming to mind are Wiscombe Park and Gurston Down where they run the occasional Hill Climbs.... always a good day out!

I too am Advanced Driver and found it astounding when looking at Insurance quotes that this did not seem to impact the cost of the premium....far too underrated and something Insurers need to embrace to encourage better driving standards in my mind.

As for your point on low mileage cars....that is the actual issue, they don't get driven hard or far enough for the big and effortless engines to effectively clear out carbon deposits which then clog the injectors and turbo vanes.
Your Bimmers certainly seem to have good miles on them, which is also a sign that they have been driven properly (progressive driving to quote the IAM)

Good to have you onboard and look forward to reading your future posts.

    Cheers,   Trevor

  9. Hi Jon.....welcome to the Forums

As Dave has mentioned, it could be a leaky injector....a simple leak-back test is all that is required to check this out.

Other possibilities could be that it is down to different driving styles, by the sound of it you are a progressive driver who uses the revs quite liberally....which may be different to how the previous owner drove it (e.g. low revs high gears) which would lead to carbon build up and of which you are clearing out of the engine and exhaust.

I wouldn't worry about it unduly at the moment and see how it goes once its had time to clear out.

Keep us informed on how it all goes

    Cheers,   Trevor

  10. Hi Dennis.....welcome to the Forums

As Dave has suggested, this may be the best route forward and I'm sure any electrical cables will have enough slack in them to increase the seat height with no problems at all.

Let us know how you get on with the purchase.

    Cheers,   Trevor

  11. You could jack up each corner on the front independently and check the tyre profile by turning the wheel slowly and looking at the tread area...been caught out like this before and it turned out to be a small bulge in the tread area which was leading to the shaking.

Also, would be worth checking the wheel nuts/bolts to be sure they are tight

  12. Hi John...welcome to the Forum

As Dave has already mentioned, the temperature you are reading is perfectly normal but if it does suddenly rise then you could have air in the system.

Some BMW engines had a small bleed screw on the thermostat housing area which you could extract any trapped air from.

Also, sometimes the impeller on the water pump parts company and this can also lead to a temperature increase.

    Cheers,   Trevor
