  1. 1st Does your Nav screen show the Telephone function

2nd Check the upper lid on the arm rest inside you will either a release box for a phone or a release box with a voice button.

2 is good if you have the voice button you have bluetooth. Press the voice button and hold it for a few seconds with ignition off turn on the ignition release the button then press again the screen will go to pairing mode. You will need the pass key to enter into your phone if it isn't with your hand books it will be on the unit buried in the left side of the boot.

If you have a code reader (BMW 1.4.0) you can start pairing from the reader

  2. I brought the X5 to tow a horse box so sounds similar use to you, also in the winter I shoot so mild off road ( snotty gateways and rutted farm and forest tracks)

I believe 17" wheels are the smallest due to the size of your brakes, with mine I need 18". Winter I run 255 x 55 x 18 Wintrac Exteme. Summer is a staggered set of 20" 275 x 40 front 315 x 35 rear running Yoko Advan. So far I have never had an issue with the horse box even when it has been a wet muddy entrance/exit to horse events.

Keep your eye on Ebay for 17" wheels most of the E53 used a 17" spare with a Michelin M&S tyre most are unused, that could be a way to build a set of cheap winter tyres that would give better traction off road.

  3. So my X5 had an Analogue TV/Video unit to which a separate DTV tuner had been added, which was OK but needed a separate remote and infra red receiver to control it.

BMW hybrid units are stupidly priced for what is basically old technology now, so I have been looking for away to upgrade the existing receiver it had to be possible? I was considering pulling it apart to do some reverse engineering but hadn't got around to it.

Then I found this http://pibus.info/tv/, Check it out, I purchased the kit and for less than £100 and converted my analogue unit to DTV. It really is as simple as it looks and says with only a little basic soldering required plus with the how too it only took 3 hrs with tea and biscuits. With great service from both suppliers it really is easy to do, I now have DTV and its controlled from the head unit, plus reception is much better than with the add on unit.

Next project buy a spare ULF and see if I can reverse engineer it to improve the BT so that I can have OEM BT phone control with A2DP

  4. That's the one. I have mine on an old laptop running windows XP that I just keep for garage use now. You can run it on later Windows but will need to set up a Virtual Machine.

Once you are up and running read the codes Note them then clear them. Run the car and see what comes back, then work through them methodically.

As said I would start with the engine codes

    Good luck

  5. OK, X5's are very sensitive to voltage changes/ battery condition if they are low it will throw all sorts of spurious warnings. If you are looking to sort it yourself buy a BMW 1.4.0 scanner about £15 to £20 on ebay it will let you see whats going on and give fault codes in English. Next I would get the battery checked, if its good make sure its fully charged if not or unsure replace it with a good quality battery. Don't sit with ignition on and engine off for long as these can flatten a battery in no time due to the amount of current all the systems take.

Each control unit retains codes so some of the codes you have may have been there for some time, even BMW often just clear the codes then drive the car to see what comes back.

With the DDE codes I would check the MAF and clean it EGR clean or replace it. Thermostats are a known issue when running is your needle dead centre?

The Webasto Aux Heaters can be a problem but are not really going to effect the main car so this and the radio and lights would be down the list to fix.

    Good Luck

  6. Congratulations and Welcome

From what I have read this is fairly common with diesel BMW's and normally happens at cold start disappears when warm. When was it last serviced? I have read there are two types of EGR one with a filter and one with a Vortex separator. Also the fuel filters on the diesels often don't get changed as it is behind a cover plate and gets forgotten.Just Google your symptoms

  7. First I agree with Steve if you brought it from a Garage take it back and ask them to sort it.

However if you want to sort it or understand it yourself I will try and help with the codes,

000002 RAD This is a Radio code if the radio is working I would suspect a speaker fault somewhere not fatal to the car

000003 STH Auxillary Heating Control I don't have this again not fatal to the car

    00000B STH As above

    00000D STH As above

000012 PDC This is Park Distance Control probably one of the sensors in the bumper these are a Royal PITA on many X5's

    000016 PDC As Above

000037 EGS Electronic Gearbox control this could be linked to one of the DDE faults but needs further investigation

00007C LCM Light Control Module if all exterior lamps light then it needs investigation suspect earth points maybe

00008D IKE This is Instrument cluster electronics could be anything from a duff earth to a bulb out not fatal to the car

    00008E LCM As above

    000093 LCM As above

    0000BD IKE As above

000100 DDE These are all Diesel Engine Management related as I don't have a diesel I cant be much help

    001260 DDE As above

    001613 DDE As above

    001E30 DDE As above

    003505 DDE As above

You say you had the turbo changed, why? Again if the fault was there when you purchased it it should have been the responsibility of the selling garage.

Why did Synter have the car?

The turbo change could have triggered some of the engine fault codes and if there is an air leak contributing to them.

Sometimes the codes can be reset and wont return.

    Hope this helps

  8. Hi

My first X5 was a 4.4 with LPG the reason for buying was we sold our Horse Transporter (not used enough) and brought a Horse trailer so needed a tow car. We also have dogs so space and towing capacity drove the choice plus V8 X5's are cheap (around 2k cheaper than a Diseasal), big bonus. When looking make sure absolutely everything works as it should, don't fall for any "simple fix" bull sh*t. In my opinion in everyday use there is little to choose between 4.4 (320bhp) and 4.8 (355bhp) both are comfortable and great mile munchers..Remember these are big heavy cars so suspension bushes are suspect at about 60k plus, but that is normal maintenance

When testing make sure you get to start the engine from cold, any rattles at start up walk away it will be expensive. Give it a good test drive and make sure the gearbox works smoothly in all modes, when you get back let the car idle for a time and then rev it any smoke from the exhaust could point to valve stem oil seals again expensive to fix. 4.8's have air suspension all round make sure it works as it should..With both I budgeted for a full service and oil changes for diffs transfer box and gearbox I also had wheel alignment checked.

Be picky and hold out for the right car and enjoy that V8 rumble, plus your neighbours will never think you came home in a taxi!!

  9. Afraid so I did mine when I was down to almost empty on the washer tank. Both my filters were clogged with a white scummy gunge, not difficult to clean just a pain having to almost drain the tank. It was a year ago I did mine.

You can see the filters on the drawing they push fit to the bottom of the pump

  10. Just looked on realoem your car has 2 pumps item 5 & 8 filters 6 & 9

It looks very similar to mine you need to almost empty the washer tank to save losing to much fluid (that or park over a drain) take out the pump and wash the strainer/filter and put it back straight forward enough job

  11. We have 4 different phones paired, my wife's HTC my Padfone and Nokia and one of my sons has an Iphone 5, The padfone and the Iphone were a pain in the proverbial's. I have read that quite a few new phones have reduced Bluetooth power to save battery power, Asus advised turning off Wifi and tethering the phone, Both phones connect with my wife's Subaru and my sons Nissan pickup after a little investigation the Bluetooth receiver in the Subaru and Nissan are in the dash/centre console area. The BMW its in the boot and the antenna is there too so it seems distance was the issue?

I read that they would only work with later BMW ULF/TCU units mine is late 2003, so I tried pairing with the Padfone in the boot near the antenna it worked, but when moved to the front dropped the signal when I tried a call. So I moved the bluetooth antenna up behind the back seat so far so good.

The big problem with the cradle fore the Iphone is which one do you have? Plus if you change/upgrade you may need a new cradle

  12. How long have you had the car? Have you talked to the dealer who did the work? Is it the supplying dealer? If so get them to sort it under the sale of goods act. If they can't or wont ask for your money back.

O2 sensors will rarely cause rough running, how ever a blocked cat will. Get them checked. You can also swap the cam sensor from Bank 2 to Bank 1 if the rough running follows the change you have your culprit.

As they had the cam covers off they may have disturbed coil packs or wiring, worth a check as you say it runs rough unless you rev it
