Can someone help, I have a bmw 520ISE 1997 and it stalls whilst driving, it does not give any indication,I wonder if you can help? I have a BMW 520 SE 1997 Dec made on R reg, done 161,000 miles, After driving some distance, it just cuts out, nothing before to warn you, just cuts out, then have to wait a few minutes, turn the ignition and it will start. Then all ok until next time.

Does it once a week like that, always nearly the same place going home from work. Otherwise engine seems ok, no problems. Do you or anyone you might know what causes this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi..welcome along

Im more knowledgeable on newer cars, but ha you checked your battery terminals ar tight?

Not had this problem on a BMW but took me weeks to find out why my Megane kept cutting out...bad design, as most cars will run off the alternator once started.

I had the exact same car with the exact same problem. My Throttle Body was getting stuck. Remove and give it a good clean with some carb cleaner. M52 engine is quite easy to navigate around so you shouldn't have a problem.

You need to sort this problem out asap as its incredibly dangerous. Can't count the amount of times i've hit a roundabout and had my PAS or Brakes die due to the engine stalling.

Hmmm this is a tricky one, but not unusual... Sometimes caused by a failing car battery, or even the immobiliser... Have the system checked... Before you do this, check/tighten the "common ground" conns under the hood... Tighten them if necessary !

You are right. I can disconnected my battery completely in the E28 and the engine continues holding 700RPM lol wouldn't try it on a more modern car though, :P

My 46 keeps running, but the Megane used to loose PAS and brakes...very dangerous, very bad design...French T**ts

  • 2 weeks later...

There is a sensor on Vxhalls that goes and causes this, Now before we all go down the superior BMW route let me finish haha. Its the crank shaft position sensor i had it on my corsa when i was 17 was a right nightmare sadly. Also had it on my lil sisters Tigra, and my uncle had it on his 05 Vectra SRI. Its worth getting it to a local specialist and having it diagnosed or is there a key dance on these cars where by if you put the key in the ignition and turn it enough times it will display codes on the dash??? If you can get a fault code then a google search should answer ur woes.

Ok thank you google try this.

1) Turn the ignition switch to the 'engine run' position.

2) Depress the gas pedal to the floor 5 times.

The CHECK ENGINE light will blink out the FAULT CODES starting with the lowest number first. These FAULT CODES

consist of 4 digits each separated by a short pause (ie. blink pause blink blink pause blink pause blink translates as 1 2

1 1).

Right down the code it tells you and come back to me with the 4digit code.
