I have been a BMW owner many years, mt first was in the 70,s which was a 2002,then I had a 2002tii then changed that when the 3 series came out, so my first 3 series was a 320i, after a couple of years I changed it for a 323i and then again changed that for a 328i. We then moved to France (my work sent me there ) and had a few French company cars until I retired and I bought a new 1 series M sport,we returned to UK a couple of years later and I registered my LHD 1 series in the UK ,my wife always wanted a caravan ,so in 2008 we bought one and the 1 series pulled it well ,but I felt it was a bit light for towing . I sold the 1 series via Ebay and it went to Spain, and then bought my new to me X3 3.0 M sport which we are very pleased with and have just returned from a 3 week 2500 mile trip around France with the caravan. The only problem the car seems to have at walking speed is the auto transmission not sure which gear it wants to be in, I understand this is common and its due to the front tyres being more than 4mm more worn than the rears and there is a software upgrade to counteract the proplem. Welcome to the club mate

You have just solved a problem for me that has had me puzzeled for weeks since getting my x5 I had a judder when putting foot down hard and slight judder when at walking speed. I changed some bushes and sway arms which solved the judder but still get slight judder when at walking speed I will look into this thanks and enjoy the forums

That sounds weird ... Do you use 4wd to tow all the time?

I ask this because you don't need to and the apparent differences in tyre tread would make no difference to traction, on tarmac in 2wd !

I stand to be corrected (and have rushed out to the car to get the handbook ) but I thought it is permanent 4 wheel drive on an X3, the only switch shown in the handbook is the DSC switch and my one series had one of those and that certainly was not 4 wheel drive.

The information about the 4mm tyre tread depth and update came direct from BMW technical department at Bracknell

Wow, that is one sensitive comp on that motor! =] I hope you do get it solved. Plenty of guys on here will help you as much as possible get to the bottom of it ultimately :)

The DSC, as you may already know, is the Dynamic Stability Control... This only affects the ride using steering and speed combined with the terrain...

Do you have a second stick/control which lets you select "How many wheels" you need driven (2 or 4) lol ???

Ahhh that's my theory blown out the water! ;P Dabz will take it home from here..

It is ACTUALLY a permanent 4wheel drive system !!! But you can adjust the settings via the menu at the top centre etc ...

I don't subscribe to permanent shite so, best you tinker with it a little...

      Tyres..what's the best alternative to run flats

      Thanks for the feedback Dave, really helpful stuff. I bet your friends and family are pleased you are sorted when it comes to puncture repair kits to keep them on the road. I like the sound of a puncture plug kit & tyre weld for screws and suchlike issues to help stay moving. Sidewall rupture is a flatbed for now, but I'm definitely going with non RFT in 17 months for the next M40d which I really enjoy driving. Ironically, we were in Arundel, W.Sussex when I got the recent pot hole blow out, so know exactly what you mean, I could not believe the state of the roads in the south of England to be honest, it was like wacky races avoiding pot holes on any main roads. We live in sunny N. Yorkshire and don't suffer from quite so many holes in the roads. Thank you for the information, but interestingly, I have already logged a claim for vehicle damage (tyre) with W. Sussex CC when I got home, their website says it can take 24 weeks before they even look at it... I'll wait and plan for the fight. Cheers Jon

      Tyres..what's the best alternative to run flats

      Morning Jon The main reason I moved away from run flats with the X5 E70 was tyre choice, with my E53 X5 I had plenty of practice. I learned that the recommended Star marked tyres were (a) not necessarily easy to get (often on back order) (b) They were also very premium priced (as you know) I started using Bridgestone and Hankook and found that they were as well matched in a staggered set as the Star marked tyres so no transmission damage. I brought the E70 to cut the miles going onto the other X5 and quickly moved it onto Hankook non run flats a set of 4 285x40x20 Front and 315x35x20 rear was just under £800. In my breakdown kit I have as said a small compressor a can of tyre weld (or similar) and a tyre plug set. I have used it a couple of times a friend of my wife has a Volvo V60 on run flats she ran over a screw one of the plugs fixed it and stayed fixed until she needed tyres. My son inlaw suffered pot hole damage to his 330e when visiting us, a can of Tyre weld got him from Sussex back to the West Midlands where they live. When he went to the tyre shop they said "shouldn't use that stuff mate we cant repair tyres that have it in" well with 2 splits in the inner side wall it was a new tyre anyway but at least he could drive 190 miles and not be stuck overnight waiting for somewhere to open. If there is a puddle I slow right down or go around if I can because in sunny Sussex it will be a Pot Hole I would go with a repair/limp kit like mine and fingers crossed the roads on the continent are in better nick than ours As an aside our son inlaw started a claim against the county council it took ages to get a resolution they wanted to know how many miles the tyre had covered ? then how old was it then said as it was a used item they couldn't offer full value !!!!       Clicking noise when disengaging clutch either when pulling off or changing gear, happens more in lower gears but can still happen in higher gears. if sat with engine running, in gear and handbrake on, and slowly release the clutch until it’s hitting point I will make the clicking noise aswell any ideas as to if this is serious or just a common bmw noise?
