I recently bought my 1series as a standard car I decided to upgrade the exhaust system and decat it I then noticed after I had my exhaust done it started pushing whitish smoke out and it was extremely strong fumey smell the car has been remapped and the smoke doesn't come out when excelerating only when ticking over? What could this be?? Garages are all saying different things

#egr valve blocked?

#oil leek and burning ?

HI Lauren....welcome to the Forum

I think the best bet would be to measure the exhaust emissions to check for HC levels (unburnt fuel/oil particles) and also CO & O2 levels which would show if the oxygen levels are correct and not overfuelling.

Any MOT station should be able to do this test (pre-mot emissions test) for you with a print out which you could post up on here.

Cheers  Trevor

Welcome Lauren

Simple things first check the Crank Case ventilation system and its pipe work and breather it should be a Vortex type I believe, also check all the vacuum pipe work as they can get soft and swell cutting down efficiency also get the EGR cleaned then the simple stuff is done now give a good "italian tune up" to clear out any gunk. If you still have an issue I would start to check the turbo oil feed and return pipes.

Hope this helps

Glad you enjoyed that Trevor

From what I have learned of modern Diseasel engines especially those with DPF technology they need to be given a good "Italian tune up" (my sons phrase) at least once a month to trigger the high exhaust temperatures needed to start a regeneration cycle saving the planet.

Me I just trundle around in my petrol V8 safe in the knowledge I am encouraging others to plant trees so I help to save the planet that way.

So you guys don't think it's anything major?

Thanks trevor did you see the video I uploaded and where would I go to have emissions tested

Yes, it shows a small amount of smoke at idle, which as Greydog has stated may be caused by EGR and vacuum hoses, etc but if oil/excess fuel is being burnt then if it's coming out of the exhaust then it should be measurable.

Any garage with an MOT station should be able to carry out a 4-gas & Lambda test and give you a print-out of the results.

Also, as Greydog has mentioned, running cleaner in the fuel to clean through the engine along with a good blast will almost certainly improved things

Morning Lauren

My diesel driving son is a tree surgeon with a Toyota Pick Up so most of his journey's a fairly short it was the Toyota garage who told him give a good run at least once a month.

He just looked at your video and asked if the white smoke is constant at tick over or if it goes when the engine is up to temperature. His pick up had that issue last year caused by only having 1 glow plug working instead of 4 it still started first time everytime, just a thought

thankyou for cxomenting basically it onbly happens when ticking over it comes and goes alot of garages are saying differewnt things its really bugging me as im worried incase its somthing serious the cars been remapped and running 210bhp its not loosing power at all it just stinks when its ticking over but thats due to it being d-cat

There may be a friendly member on here who has a code reader (what area are you) that would put your mind at rest if it is stinky that sounds like un-burnt diesel. Your obviously a girl who enjoys her car and wants to understand it. you could download a program like Carly for BMW if you have an Android phone I think I am right in saying 2005 on you can use a Bluetooth dongle to connect to your phone or BMW 1,4,0 for a laptop, These will let you interrogate whats happening so that even if you need assistance from a garage you will know whats happening,

Another thought talk to the Guys who did the remap it may just need tweaking to allow for the exhaust and de cat
