Would a faulty/failed lambda sensor make my car 'chug' ?

It has the other symptoms such as using fuel like there is no tomorrow, and hesitates slightly, it also has a funny idle, sometimes idling to high then other times its fine, it was a bit of a sod to start yesterday.

I have cleaned the ICV and checked for air leaks, ive replaced the rocker cover gasket and now I don't know what else to try.

My local mechanic said he thinks it sounds like a lambda sensor but said he doesn't really know cos he doesn't like working on BMW's!!!!
