Hi all, hope everyone is well....

I'll be cracking on with the 320 (E36) today.... but before i start i have no diag software because the stuff i received from ebay yesterday was not as described here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-PC-CAR-DIAGNOSTIC-SCANNER-CODE-READER-PA-SOFT-1-3-6-/150771202591?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item231aa9fa1f#ht_2006wt_952 i received software version 1.4.0 and only the cables that use USB connection....

I have tried them and the software\scanner cannot scan\recognise anything each result is not found......contacted seller so i'm waiting on a responce...

So today i'll be stripping down the front and rear brakes checking ABS sensors for any wear on the cables cleaning brakes and parts... take off the exhaust and replace with new one but ill have to grind that off...any tips on removing very rusty bracket on the back box where the rubber mounting point is? :unsure:

Hi, yes the ignition was switched on, the install of 1.4.0 software completed, however on start up there was a couple of error messages regards writing to disk figured out that the contents of the disc need to be copied locally and run the install from c:\ location, Started the program and the tried to do a scan but absolutely nothing was found. Version 1.3.6 should be with me tomorrow which has the serial cables rather than the USB which was sent with 1.4.0....

Ok so i have received the 1.3.6 BMW Software scanner and serial cables... the install completed and i had the ignition ON, started the program and ran a check but all i get is "no communication with unit"... see screen shot below... i have it set to com port 1 and optimised for 2000\XP....... What am i doing wrong or is it that this scanner just does not work with my ECU........?????

Have a quick look in Control Panel/System/ Device Manager - Just to make sure it is recognised the new stuff !!

I know this doesnt help much,but its the same software i use on the E36,Il load mine up tonight and write down the settings

Hi Ian, that would be great if you could... i'll check that the device is being recognised but i think it is as if i disconnect the serial cable from COM1 and try run a check the error message is different and says something about hardware not ready...

Ok im going to assume what i have bought from Ebay is not going to work for me, so i will try to send it back and have a look at buying the correct Kit....

I dont suppose anyone would know a direct link to a site where i can buy diagnostics software for my 1994 E36... i have tried "Carsoft" on Ebay but am not spending £££'s.

Thanks Ian, i will have to give it another go.... and take some pics of the results.... maybe reinstall the software... would you advise installing the software whilst the hardware is connected to the laptop and the Car with ignition on (by on i mean all lights indicated on dask).

Hi, Well i tried and i failed, i got the same result... i have checked the com port 1 settings and they are all set to default 9600 8 n 1. There is no details with the software to suggest that the settings should be any different... so i give up i'll relist this kit and try sell it on......... to someone with an E38, E46 ect...

Are you coming to the Kent meet?

The 320i SE will only be on the road 31st get the MOT, TAX and Insurance alll in one day so will be very strapped for cash... if there is a meet up north or even midlands way i'll defo come to one of them....
