E46 oil seal degradation

Featured Replies

HI, the E46 650i has just clicked over 100K and is 20 yrs old this year. The attached video shows the likely state of the oil seals on various parts of the engine, namely oil cooler and this is from the basket seals on each side of the engine. Just look at how brittle they become!!!!

Also the oil cooler seals went the same way.

Good to have captured this and what is really good is that mechanically the engine etc looks fab

Its good that you had the foresight to check them and replace the seals before tragedy struck - nothing lasts forever I guess but components this essential should at least outlast the car, thanks for posting up the information - could save someone the aggro and cost of an engine rebuild
