Hi all,

Got a whine coming from the engine that has gotten progressively worse. Sounds a bit like a bearing or pulley to me but not certain. Has anyone else had a similar noise before? Wondering whether it's the water pump? See attached for audio. Cheers,

Morning Joe

When was the car last serviced ? Did they change drive belts ? At higher mileages I would change change Belts and Tensioners, plus while your in there with no belt in the way check the alternator water pump and aircon pump pulleys

Certainly sounds like a pulley

Good Luck

Morning Dave,

Serviced last in February. Had oil, coolant and brake fluid change. As of the belts and pulleys there's nothing in service history. The auxiliary belt does show signs of slight cracking, I've bought a new belt and water pump to do the job but wanted to try and source the noise so I can fix that while the car is in bits. Any suggestions on what pulleys I need? Wanted to try and replace only the worn ones but not a clue how many/which ones need changing.

Cheers,

Joe

Hi Joe

Take a look at www.realoem.com if memory serves there is a deflection pulley and a tension pulley. The deflection pulley I think is plastic so could well be your culprit

Try a squirt of WD40 on the centre of each pulley (do it 1 at a time) if it stops the noise you know which it is

Been a while, forgot to update sorry. Turned out to be the belt tensioner pulley at fault, bearing was goosed. Hope this helps some people.

Hi, my e87 118d msport making the exact same noise, was this an easy repair?? I'm quite handy with a spanner. . Cheers.

Morning Nick

Welcome to the Forum

Check www.realoem.com put the last 7 Digits of your Vin in the search box then search the engine section to find where it is

Then take a look at the car to see what is in the way (how much stuff needs removing) then if your happy crack on. Use the part number from realoem to get the parts needed

Good luck

Fairly easy for me with limited knowledge. Took and hour or 2 at most. Changed the belt whilst there, if you do make sure it's the right length as there are a few types depending on accessories such as a/c. Once the belt was off you can spin each pulley and locate the bad one. In my case it was one of the tensioners.

Great advice gents, got a similar type of noise, literally started today, definite cyclic in nature so linked to the belt and pulleys and will try the WD40 first to see if I can isolate the cause of it before moving on.
