hi all

ive got a BMW 116 I  2012

ive noticed past few weeks im loosing coolant, and also putting about 1 liter of oil in a week now and sometimes when cold and wet its a bit spluttery / gutless on start up , also there is a little bit of black soot appearing on the tail pipe, but no signs of smeg in the coolant or the oil, ive changed the thermosat housing at the back of engine as that was leaking,

any suggestions would be much appreciated

Morning Adam

Loosing coolant if it hasn't stopped after changing the thermostat? You need to first look for signs of an external leak? Any signs of drips under the car overnight? No damp or wet carpet inside? The water pump I believe is electric any leaks there? If you are sure there are no leaks get a garage to pressure test the system and rad plus do a sniff test in the header tank that will confirm if there are head gasket issues or not.

Oil usage/loss you don't say how many miles you have on the engine? A litre a week seems high but if your covering mega miles maybe not? Again check externally for leaks/drips. When was it's last full service? Plugs, Coil packs air fuel and oil filters? While at the garage ask for a compression test to get an idea of engine condition, changing parts won't fix a badly worn engine.

If there's no external leak then it's got to be going into the cylinders, hasn't it?

1 litre a week sounds horrendous, like post above how many miles per litre.

If the coolant leak has now stopped then the compression test is the way to go as the black smoke will mean an Mot failure, I think?

hi all sorry just replied

I've managed to fix the coolant leak it was a silly connector that was leaking.

im still loosing a bit of oil    the turbo  doesn't seem to be passing and also there are no visible leaks anywhere and also I have no smoke , also check the valve stem seals by leaving  to get very warm tkin over and revving and no white smoke either, im wondering if it could be a carbon build up  ? as the car feels a little slow sometimes and also fuel consumption as gone up a little and there's a bit of a chemical smell when u take the oil filler cap of

 cheers adam

Adam, how many miles are on the 116i. Is it a vehicle that has been subject to the BMW long servicing regime?

The oil is going somewhere. Have you got a miles per litre usage you can give us. The good news is if there is no smoke then it won't hurt at MOT time with regards visible smoke but may hurt on emissions of course. Have you checked the emissions for HC etc, this could give a good indication of where the oil is going and if the vehicle would pass the MOT when the time comes. How does this engine breath, is the breather blocked. I'm guessing someone on here knows about the breather.

Good luck.

I've just read the PCV valve, breather valve should be part of regular maintenance. Don't know if this is specific to the 116i. Speak to a franchise or independent specialist for cost of replacement. It doesn't sound to onerous if indeed it is relevant.
