Sorry if this has been covered already I could not find it. I have a 640d m sport 2014 which has covered 40k. I get a drivetrain warning randomly which then tells me to drive moderately. The weird thing is it is not all the time and after 30 mins disappears, can anyone shed light? I had the egr recall checked and pressure tested it was fine. Thanks in advance

Morning Oneel

First port of call, you need the gearbox codes read to know if it is actually a gearbox issue or something else. A ZF agent or good Independent with Autologic software a BMW Dealer or Specialist with dedicated software.will be able to read all Gearbox functions, at 40k a gearbox service is almost due so consider that also.

It could be as simple as a sensor not reading intermittently or a software upgrade without the codes it is a guess which could end up with £££ and parts being thrown at the problem.

Hi guys, so got a 640d

first issue is : in the last 3 months I’ve had a bad oil burning smell enter through the vents and a load of burning oil smoke coming from the engine ? Has been checked for oil leaks nothing has been found .. could it be the cat be blocked ?

second issue: drive train, randomly pops up

Morning Maze

Welcome to the Forum

First is it Oil or Diesel (neither is good) the smell should tell you. Who checked for Oil Leaks and what did they check? Did they check the turbo oil feeds and returns for example. Has the fuel system and emissions system been checked including the return system. Has your car had the EGR recall?

Finally, the Drive train warning can be triggered by sensors on the Engine, Gearbox, and Diff

You don't say how many miles the car has covered and what it's history is. Get the engine sorted first then depending on the result (is the Drivetrain warning gone) check the rest. A diagnostic scan with a BMW capable scanner would be a great help.

Thanks for the reply GREYDOG

its covered 110k, it’s got good prompt service history, it’s normally driven locally or parked up .. so that why I guessed could the CAT be blocked ?
the burning smell is of oil definitely  , as far as the trusted mechanic has advised there are no leaks around the engine that could be dripping in the exhaust/manifold  area, he did find the gearbox drain plug was a little loose because Yes the recall on the egr is done (bmw) they did a health check and said there was oil sitting in the engine tray.

im not entirely sure if any of the components you’ve mentioned have been checked.

or the sensors for the drive train you’ve mentioned .

Hi Maze

If BMW found oil sitting on the engine tray it would appear there is a leak somewhere?

If the Gearbox Drain was loose, I would start there make sure it is tightened correctly (correct torque) and not leaking then check the Transmission fluid level and top up if required that could well be your drivetrain issue. As for oil in the engine tray if someone was clumsy topping up that could account for it, or an oil feed or return at the turbo's could be at fault. Catalyser's can be blocked but as yours is also your DPF you would have all sorts, other issues not the least of them poor running. BMW would also have picked it up on the health check (you can measure the amount of soot held in the DPF) they would have recommended a Regeneration cycle, I am sure.

Dave

Thanks greydog

I’ll double check all with mechanic.
I’m sure he would have topped up the transmission
