Morning Ian

That's a new one, have you tried starting in neutral in case it is something like the inhibitor switch. To be sure you will need the codes read, no other lights or warnings?

Hi Dave,

No warning lights at all, the Mrs was driving it yesterday when it suddenly cut out, she then then starts straight away, but as soon as you try to put it into any gear, the engine then cuts out, called the AA out, but then 20 minutes or so later, tried starting again and went into gear and drove home, just concerned now as I can do long journeys with work and don't want it happening.

I will get a diagnostic check asap to see if that shows anything.

Have seen posts about a faulty MAP(manifold absolute pressure) sensor causing this kind of issue?

That's why you need the codes to point you in the right direction otherwise it's change parts and hope which is a wallet busting way to try and fix things.

The list of possible culprits is long fuel filter, fuel pressure sensor, MAP sensor, MAF, Fuel pumps

Hi Dave,

Car cut out on me, got AA to come out, ran the diagnostic check and found nothing code wise to suggest what the problem was, had to then get a tow truck to a garage.

The car now starts, but it then immediately cuts out, like the ECU detects an instant issue and kills the engine

I still think you will have codes there if there is an ECU issue, senor issue, fuel issue it will log a code you need a BMW specific code reader. I did read somewhere about the ignition switch barrel giving problems but I can't for the life of me remember what it was sorry.

Does it stay running if you give it a bit of throttle?  ECU's typically don't shut the car off, although they will prevent it from starting.  Starting and then dying makes me think there might be an issue in the idle control system.
