Hi again everyone I have been absent for approx 8 years but have now returned to the fold with a 2008 E61 520D touring which has come to me with 1 key green log book slip and MOT and 152k on the clock so as you can imagine I need to get to grips with it, my question is can anyone recommend a reasonably priced BMW specific diagnostic software system with the correct cable that is also simple to use as I am no tech whizz kid, I have looked on ebay and there are thousands advertised but most look to be absolutely lacking in after sales support which with my technical experience is a must many thanks Chris

Hi Christopher....welcome to the Club

There are so many out there....here's a couple of links for the cheaper ones, which although they do work for pulling out codes and cancelling them down, they do lack a lot of other functions.

Morning Chris

Welcome, I have 2 pieces of software loaded on an old laptop

1st. BMW 1.4.0 works really well allows interrogation of individual control modules and the fault is described in English not just a code number. Cost £14 from Ebay and is great for older models. Example my parking sensors stopped working a scan with 1.4.0 showed PDC 1 error when interrogated the fault is Rear inner right sensor fault.

2nd.. Inpa which came with 5 disc's including TIS the dealer level technical files, I have this on the same lap top this cost about £50 from memory brilliant for the newer models but has stuff for my X5 as well.

There are many others like Carly which works with a Bluetooth dongle (never tried it but read some poor reviews so avoided)

I use mine in conjunction with a couple of web sites like www.realoem.com (BMW online parts and part numbers) and www.newtis.net technical information sheets this makes sure when I am buying parts they match the OEM partnumbers plus the drawings let me know what i looks like and where it is.

great information Dave....I'm after some newer scan tools as my set is the old round plug models that still work on my Z3 but has limited data through the K-line.

Will probably give the v1.4.0 a try if you rate it and at that price it's worth a punt.

      4x4 abs ebv dsc failure

      Morning Steven First I take it you are working from lights on the dash you really do need a Diagnostic session to be sure of the Fault cause. From your description the fault could be the Junction Box/FRM (footwell control module) it controls many functions. You will need to change it if you can get the same part number it will be straight forward but you will need to match the mileage so note it before starting or you will get a tamper dot on the dash Dave

      X3 - YOM 2013 -Coolant change

      Morning Stewart There is a drain plug in the bottom of the rad or simply pop off the bottom hose. The hoses have an "O" ring seal held by a spring clip, if you prize up the spring clip you can wiggle the hose off have a big tub/bowl to catch the coolant Dave

      Damper pulley

      Morning Frank Who told you that ? The Damper pulley is made of steel as is the inner boss the two parts are held together by a vulcanised rubber core it is probably the rubber which is showing cracks, how did they see it? If you look down from the top of the engine and the pulley is wobbling when the engine is running I would consider changing it (if you do then it is worth changing Belts Tension and Guide pulleys as well) If the pulley is steady then I wouldn't worry to much Hope this helps Dave

      4x4 abs ebv dsc failure

      So guys back again ive got a fault code on my bmw x5 e70 saying 4x4 abs ebv failure previous owner just went and changed the abs pump but never coded it so I sent the original off to ecu testing to see if it was faulty it came back today and they said the original pump had no faults at all but whilst I was waiting for it to come back the car has been doing stupid things like wipers staying on when car turned off passenger window not working to the point the motor burns out on it radio staying on when cars off im literally getting to the point i give up only owned it a month any help I would appreciate it
