Alpina?? Please Enlighten Me

Hi guys

Im currently looking at e60 530d's and have come across one with alpina badge on the front, back and on the rear armrest but the car is advertised as a bmw 530d. obviously ive emailed the guy to find out if its just been re-badged and is in fact a standard bmw.

this is the first alpina ive come across and was wondering whats the difference and which is better? or is it a matter of preference?
