Hi guys,

I always had a it of a whining noise coming from somewhere behind me when only just touching the accelerator in 5th a 50-60mph ish. But now I've noticed it when I'm high revving in third under load.

My initial thought is a fuel pump? Anyone have any ideas?

At first I thought it was just because my car is stripped that I could hear it, but now it's started doing it in third (only high revving) I'm thinking it might be the pump on its way out or something.

Steve

That maybe the diff. when last was the oil changed or topped up, it might not cure the whining but it's worth

doing especially if the car been driven in a spirited manor on a regular basis.

Spirited..... I like that haha. But when I accelerate even the slightest amount in 5th it stops or if I'm completely off the accelerator it doesn't do it.

Could this still be the diff?

First thing that popped into my mind when I was reading this is

"Diff"

Well it would be good in a way if it is as I'm just waiting for my input flanges to turn up and my new diff is going in :).

On another note I'm trying to look into some power flex diff bushes. Thought it would be a good idea to do while I'm swapping the diff. But as I'm still new to the BMW I'm not sure what one's I need. Can only seem to find compact diff bushes and the power flex website confuzzles me lol.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers mate. Still a little confused as to what bushes I need for the diff. Sorry if it's me being un bmw educated lol.

the symptoms you described for your noise is not the fuel pump!

I agree with the above posters, its most likely the diff.

check if its leaking or change the fluid to a slight thicker grade - -_-

worst case change the diff - like you are doing so :P

Cheers for the replies. Now I no that I probably should have taken my diff out and welded that one as the one I welded was probably in better condition haha.

Oh well you win some, you loose some. I'll still split the original one when I get it out to have a little look.

I'll keep everyone posted.
