I have been informed by the BMW dealer that my n/s/r coil spring is fractured. They will replace the spring on the nearside only, as the offside one is ok. Is this ok ? Should I insist that they replace the offside as well. my car is a 318i se estate. Lost brume.

It;s good practice to chain both at the same time and it depends on how long the other spring has remained in situ. I personally would change them but BMW are probably thinking about costs and there is nothing to say you MUST change springs in pairs.

You can only ask mate. but, if they do say no I don't think there is alot you can do about it because as I said, there isn't anything that states you MUST.

I agree with Daz... But who sells new springs individually?

Always always replace suspension and brake components as a pair. It is the only way to achieve an evenly balanced system. Also don't go to BMW. They will bleed you dry. A good VAT registered garage will charge half the amount,so you'll get both sides done for the same money. hope this helps.Dave

I agree as well get both changed. Find a good BMW specialist and I'm sure they will agree. I use DM Worx in Aylesbury and I have nothing but good things to say about their services and prices.

always change both springs on the same axle together to maintain the same strength under hard cornering & throttle.

the same principle applies to shock absorbers.

its a common practise but some only change the defected part.
