I have a e36 compact 1999 316i with 1.9 engine and has recently started to struggle to start. I have not long bought the car so decided to give it a service, changed plugs, oil, oil filter and air filter, the air filter was black like it hadn't been serviced or years. But the service has made no difference.

When I first bought the car it was fine but now I have to give it some revs to start, not all the time but majority of the time, once started it runs like a dream.

Has anyone else had this happen and could give me some advice, thanks

Because the air filter was choked I would suggest cleaning the Throttle-body too as it will have struggled to get decent air !

I have other ideas but start with this first ;)

What would be the best way to clean it, would you say stripping it and cleaning it or just getting some carb cleaner spray? And my mate said that with the air filter being so black it might have clogged up maf! Is there a way to clean these or would it be best to replace

Carb clear spray is ok...

Best idea is to take it off and thoroughly brush it using the above or even petrol or Isopropyl.

Be careful when cleaning the MAF as the tiny copper strands are brittle ;)
