5 Months Of Driving A 728I E38
Hi all Sorry I've not been about for a a while! I thought I'd update on the W Reg 728i you all convinced me to buy in January this year. I've done about 4k miles and thought I'd give some feedback for those thinking of buying! I do mainly round town but some motorways and am getting about 24mpg around the suburbs and 33mpg on a decent run. Fuel costs are therefore not even 20% more than my modern diesel Saab, whichI thought was amazing. I have got 500miles out of £100 of fuel in the BMW. The sport setting gets rid of fuel quickly but it's a lot of fun and a very good way to get out of trouble. I've had an oil service and nothing else, which cost about £80, including a thorough check over and the garage said I had a great car! The PAS reservoir appears to leak but takes 2 months before any problems show (car groans as it steers) and apparrently it's just some hoses that need sorting, although that could be a little tricky according to the garage. I've not changed the air filters yet, even though I meant to, I will do that soon. Anyone want to give me some tips on where to get them? I think it's an easy job but I still can't find a workshop manual for this car, sadly. One great feature is the moving seats, I don't know what it's called but the driver and passenger seats move and moblises the spine whilst I drive. It really does make a difference. AC is very cold, although does make a faint but funny sound so I'll get that looked at when I do the hoses above. other than that, it's so comfortable and so nice to drive. My only regret is not buying one sooner! And I am wondering about a 740.......!! I did see an 750 V12 which was beautiful but I bet that would just drive from one petrol station to another! Thanks for all your support guys! Hope we can do a meet somewhere near me sometime! Cheers Paul

What Does This Badge Mean?

List is going well! I was just thinking there's some folk on here whom I'd like to buy a beer.... then I realised a meet is the last place for that!! Also perhaps worth thinking about where to meet. Maidstone? Dartford? I like's me biker / trucker places, and there's a good one of these in Wrotham, which is just off the M20/M26 junction. Or somewhere more North of the River?

E38 Mats
yes, you're right, especially with muddy kids! I was thinking of getting some really nice ones but I think for now anything decent will do! Meanwhile, it's not as bad on the MPG as I thought, getting about 400miles / tank and worth every penny! Loving it more every day! :)

redex
thanks, didn't think so. I couldn't see how it would be worth the massive extra pence per litre

Ha! just put 1/4 of a bottle in my tank! Oh well Interested about the premium fuels, does this make a difference really? Is it worth it for £6-7 extra per tank? I've on[ly had my 728 (E38) for a month, still exploring it....

E38 Mats
Hi I've got an E38 with a light grey interior and no car mats. I've seen plenty online, varying prices, all saying they're the best. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Late 1998 728I Sport Reliable?
OK well that's interesting. I do like the look of those Lexi. Meanwhile, my trans fluid was changed 3 years / 20k ago and no issues.

Late 1998 728I Sport Reliable?
I've been researching for several months on these cars, talking to many owners and not heard bad things said about the gearbox. One person said change the oil every 60k and you're ok. Funnily enough, I was also looking at a 90's Lexus but all the reviews and feedback said they were unreliable. I think it depends on how you look after it really.

Late 1998 728I Sport Reliable?
Welcome to the forum, you'll find loads of well informed & friendly people here. It's a great place! I've just bought one. 122k on the clock, FSH, mechanic that checked it the other day said it should do 300k. From what I've seen, parts don't seem too bad. Although I've recently come over from owning Saabs, where owners get together and compare part prices, trying not to cry as they do it.

New 728I (E38) Owner
Well, it was a Friday..... I was just pleased that it doesn't appear to need anything urgently. But yes, I suppose I would've felt better if they'd have been a bit more proactive. but then, as that means less money for them, I guess it's good that they've erred on the side of no work needing doing! I want to keep the car for a long time, so I do want to make sure it's properly looked after. Those sparks are bugging me now, I'm going to go downstairs and check them out myself in a bit. [

Good news! The garage gave me a clean bill of health! They think the vibrating is wheel balancing, but were only guessing as they couldn't see the fault themselves. I looked again at the service history and the trans fluid was changed in 2009, at 92k miles. They said not to bother changing the sparks (for the 4 prong Bosch ones) as they were changed 2.5 years (20000m) ago, and apparrently they last for 40k - what do you guys think? Slight oil sump leak, hard to see how much but they don't think it's too much of an issue now. Also the rear trailing arms both sides have slight play but they don't see I need to do anything about it yet.
