Not sure on water pump mate. Control arm bushes are a common problem, but I just changed my control arms and bushes my self for £70 and a few hours of my time, and I'm no mechanic. As for hand break, it works like a drum break style break inside the rear disc so this won't be connected to your foot break issue. The foot break issue will be worn pads, the hand break issue will be due to the fact the E46 hand break is just terrible.

It applying to u 320d They are flaps in your inlet manifold that open when your car is idle but running. They can break free and suck into your engine practically writing it off, trust me, I have first hand experience of this. Get them removed ASAP dude

As Dabsy said, straight 6 or any diesel in a BMW will be good. 4 pot petrols are slow, thirsty and generally bad news

Has it been very cold by you? Water in the hoses could have frozen and popped them off the jets.
