I think you will either choose a car with gadgets in petrol or get a diesel with a higher mileage, Lower mileage diesel e46 starts about £5,500, good luck with finding your car.

Have you tried Piston Heads http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3188609.htm one example under 68,000 miles, fsh 328 se, this is petrol though under £2,000. :D
