I recently bought my first BMW, a 2011 318i Touring. My previous car was a Golf GTi but I had prepared myself for the drop in performance as a compromise for getting the newest car I could afford with the balance of the manufacturer's warranty and a service pack.

Unfortunately I'm really not enjoying it. I'm not sure if it's the gear ratios or the clutch The only way I can describe it is that it feels like hard work driving it around town.

It doesn't 'feel' like there is anything wrong with it. No strange noises etc. It just doesn't seem as smooth as the Golf. Naturally none of this was apparent on the short test drive!

I know my description is a little vague but has anyone else experienced this or is it just me and I've simply chosen the wrong car? I would be very grateful for your thoughts...

I think I get you.

I own a 320d e46 tourer 2003 model

BMWs tend to be heavy steering and heavy clutch.

I cant comment on your gear ratios as they will be a little different to mine, but it took me a few months to get used to my very first BMW (320d saloon E46).

At first it did feel like I was lugging it about on my back, but I have grown to like it now and I just hate driving any other car.

I had a A3 not so long back, 1.8T Quattro (Not muck unlike your GTI), and that just felt very loose and horrible to drive.

Its something you will get used too and begin to love.

It may take a bit of time to get used to the lack of performance.

BMW's are heavier than Golfs, the four-potter in your BMW should be more than capable (but I think ALL BMW's should have a straight-six or better LOL), why not take it back and ask the Service Manager to have a go?

Thank you for the replies. Very much appreciated.

I did think about speaking to the service manager but as I really don't think there is anything actually wrong, it seemed like a waste of time. I am hoping I get used to it but after spending rather a lot of money it's a little disappointing to not be completely happy with it!
