Replace Gear Shift Knob

Just bought my 04 54 X3. Delighted with the car. Condition A1 except gear knob which is showing some wear.

Bought leather bound replacement on eBay £44, was advised it was a twist and pull by "trade seller" I also asked my local BMW dealer and they said give it a crack and it should come loose.

Is it just a friction fit ?

Is it bonded ?

Can I do any damage by trying too hard ?

Should I cut into the side of the existing item ?

Any Advise please.

Thanks
