Welcome to BMWOC Matey :)

From the Diff when you change gear? Ummm unusual if so I would say. Dabz is the best to ask regarding that

Good luck!

Daz

Hi Jim... You need to explain it a little more because I cannot image why you would change gear without engaging the clutch

If the clutch is depressed and you select 1st there is an audable thud this can be heard in 2nd and 3rd if in slow traffic. it is almost as if there is play in the diff or drive shafts that is being taken up when you select gear but have not yet released the clutch.

could it possibly be bushes or maybe worn drive shafts the car is a 1999 323ci with 11200 miles.

cheers

also as a quickie where is the microswithch that drops the windows on a coupe when you open the door located?

Jim

First- If you select 1st with clutch down, there should be NO thud unless the clutch is giving way...

Second- If this "thud" is apparent thru the other gears whilst driving then, it could be a worn crown wheel inside the diff or even a failed centre bearing on the prop...

Thirdly- It could be a suspension bush issue as the car takes the strain of motion...
