Good morning. I am thinking of buying a 2018 220d coupe with 50k miles on the clock. Just a few questions:-

Has the timing chain issue been resolved for this year off car. Heard a few horror stories.

Are they generally reliable cars.

How much should I budget per year for servicing. Approx 7000 miles per year.

any advise would hi greatly appreciated.

thank you in advance.

Morning Andrew

Welcome to the Forum

Timing chain issues are quite rare but still exist, the upper timing chain can be changed in situ I believe (not done one personally). My own instinct is as extended service intervals became the norm the number of incidents increased I change oil and filters annually at similar miles to those you intend. Use only good quality oil and filters

Generally as with good maintenance they are capable of star ship mileages

As for any used car  History History History. Use all the checks you can to verify mileage use and service history. On your test drive ensure everything works as it should every button every switch every gadget. Tyres should be good condition and good quality.

Then if your happy with the car and the price, ENJOY YOUR BEEMER

Hey there! Good morning to you too, and congrats on considering the 2018 220d coupe – sounds like a sleek ride you're eyeing up. Let's tackle your questions one by one.

First off, regarding the timing chain issue, BMW has made improvements over the years to address any potential issues. However, it's always a good idea to do your research and perhaps ask the seller or a trusted mechanic if any specific updates or fixes have been done to the timing chain on the 2018 model.

As for reliability, BMWs are generally known for their solid build quality and performance. With proper maintenance and care, they can be quite dependable. That said, like any car, they may have their quirks, so it's essential to stay on top of routine maintenance and address any issues promptly.

When it comes to servicing costs, budgeting around $700 to $1000 per year for routine maintenance sounds about right for a car driven around 7000 miles annually. This would cover things like oil changes, filter replacements, and inspections. Of course, actual costs can vary depending on factors like your location, the condition of the car, and any additional services needed. Hope this helps, and best of luck with your decision!
