I have a intermittent fault with my air suspension going down. The suspension goes down when parked and engine turned off and until recently seemed to be mainly in cold weather. The suspension comes back up once the engine is running again although on some occasions this has not been the case.  Recently it has started to go down while driving making the ride very uncomfortable if this has been the case the suspension won’t come up until the car has been switched off and stood for awhile. I have had the pump and suspension  air bags checked out by a independent garage who says they are ok. Would appreciate any help.

Thanks

John

Hi John

Welcome to the Forum

Before you do anything check the fuses in the boot make sure the fuses and relay are all good and seated properly

There is a pneumatic distribution and control unit which is attached to the pump if the car has 4 wheel air suspension it can raise or lower to keep things on an even keel. Check www.realoem.com put the last 7 digits of your Vin into the search box it will bring up your model, then search the relevant section. There will be a small exploded drawing showing where stuff is and Part numbers to make sure if you are buying you get the right part.

Then Google is your friend to find the part you need at the best price

The air suspensionis on the rear only with a F11.

Your garage is wrong. If it goes down there is a leak in one or both air springs, or less likely,  a leak In the valve block situated on the compressor assembly.

If there are intermittent issues with the air springs not being filled by the compressor then,

a) the electrical  feed is failing due to the relay, faulty fuse or wiring.  Changing the relay is a low-cost easy solution.

b) the compresser is working  too hard , overheating, and being shut down by the cars electrical system.

c) the compressor control valves are partially fauly, sticking in the 'dump air' position.

d) the compressor has mechanically partially failed.

My recommendation  is to change both air springs and the compressor control relay as first step.

Air spring  from ebay  £ 50 to 60 for a pair, or Dunlop brand, again on ebay ,£ 200  for two. (Take care some sellers  are selling the low cost unit at high prices)

The quality is equal to BMW items.

They are not handed and take 30 minutes to fit.  Easy as a diy, you tube will show you how. If you  can change wheel  you can fit an airspring.

In the unlikely event that the issue persists then the compressor needs looking at.

The replacement distribution valve and air dump valve  are available on ebay and amazon at low cost. Even a complete compressor assembly is not too expensive  on ebay.
