Hello everyone.

I’m having trouble with my CAS System. Sometimes when I plug the key in; the dash remains off, and unable to start (no indications whatsoever)..........it seems to be an intermittent fault, as sometimes it seems fine........Has anybody had a similar fault?........I have checked all fuses, and wiggled the connections to the CAS.............It just seems so unreliable.

Morning Stuart

Welcome to the Forum

First have you tried another key? Just to rule that out the next step would be a Diagnostic Scan if you don't have the equipment find a garage with a BMW capable scan tool.

Hello Dave,

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I’ve tried both keys......They both work fine when the CAS is operating correctly........I’ve tried a Carly when it wasn’t. It doesn’t scan anything without the ignition being turned on (which is the problem). Someone has mentioned the CAS Relay, but I can’t find it in any of the manuals......Unless it is part of the CAS Module and a soldered relay??

Stuart

OK thinking of the simple things first I guess you have tried reprograming  the keys ?

I don't know if Carly is capable of programming/reprograming the CAS/EWS if it cant be repaired by someone like BBA Reman or ECU Testing

If your unit is failing any replacement will need programming to your DME and registered to your chassis plus the keys reregistered. I know it can be done with ISTA/INPA so if you don't have access to it may time to get some quotes from a BMW Specialist or someone who has.

Dave

If it’s not lighting the dash intermittently, have you tried the ignition switch relay? It’s a clip on item under the steering wheel cowling opposite the ignition barrel. If this is failing it would not send the signal to tell the ews or cas aswell as the dashboard to work. … it’s worth a try!

I don’t think it’s a key problem, as both keys work fine when whatever is intermittent, is working??........I’ll perhaps look at getting a mobile key guy, as they should be able to at least test the system.......It’s certainly a strange problem.......I don’t have an ignition barrel, as the key plugs into the dash......perhaps the key receptical has a loose connection?.....it’s only a small ribbon cable that runs between that, and the CAS,

A Diagnostic scan is needed otherwise you are going to throw money at it unnecessarily. A diagnostic scan with the right equipment will show even faults not present but held in the memory

Dave

Thanks Dave,

ill book it into a local BMW Specialist
