Evening all, im trying my best not to regret selling my E39 530 prior to buying an E87 120d (2007, N47)…

I took a chance on a spares or repair but I suspect the seller knew more than he was letting on. When the car arrived it had the rail pressure sensor unplugged - so it would drive but lacked any kind of power.

Once plugged back in, the car pulls like a train up to 3500 rpm at which it misfires and judders. The fault clears itself once revs drop back below. No fault codes are being stored however.

I suspect it is either over fuelling or putting oil in the bores.

Can any of you 1 series specialists point me in the right direction? Hopefully not back to the classifieds - I want to believe BMW still make cars like they made my 530!

Many thanks in advance.

Paul

Morning Paul

Welcome to the Forum

I do remember reading some time ago about a turbo issue with the 2.0d. From memory it was a problem with the variable turbo vanes. One unhappy chap wrote a lengthy letter to Auto Express due to BMW or his Dealer seemingly not able or willing to help. If I recall he had 2 or 3 turbo's under warranty as the actuator was an integral part of the turbo.

Not much help with a solution sorry, have you tried babybmw.net to see if there are any pointers there

Hi Dave, many thanks for your response. It's proving difficult to isolate as the more I read the more it becomes apparent that the N47 is just a poor engine. Could be any number of things! I have posted it on babybmw but ive not had any steers other beyond resetting fault codes etc.

A BMW tech has just told me to check and clean the swirl flaps as this could be a problem. YouTube very kindly provides videos on how to remove the swirl flaps, but also videos on why you should never remove the swirl flaps on an N47. Looking forward to watching this evening!

Did you get anywhere with this? Having similar issues with my 2009 316d N47 engine
