Have just been quoted £555.65 for oil / filter change (auto 5 speed gearbox } gear box changes alright but seems to over rev before changes.

could something else be causing this?

that seems very expensive...have you tried an independent garage / specialist for a quote for replacing the fluid and also what could be causing the revving?

I paid a similar price at an independent recently on my 08 530d using genuine BMW parts, new sump, mechatronic sleeve and 7 or 8 ltrs of expensive fluid. I did it as a precaution as mine has done 120K and I had no evidence that it had been done in the service history.

Certainly a case of better safe than sorry...money well spent in the long run I would imagine.

Did you notice any difference afterwards?  (apart from the lighter wallet)

BMW quote the boxes as sealed for life, however ZF (who make the box in my X5) say it should be serviced at 80k to 100k Km around 50 to 60k miles. Many owners will change engine oil and filters at short time/distance to lengthen engine life but the poor old gearbox (manual or auto) and diffs often never see a spanner unless there is an issue.  

I would find a good Auto Box specialist who can read the codes in the gearbox and give an accurate diagnosis, plus you may be pleasantly surprised at the cost of a service.
