Clock On Radio Display

Hi I've got a e39 523 se 1998 the time clock on the original radio has recently started going blank every now and then I've discovered the only way to get it back on is to turn the ignition off and back on I was wondering if anyone has come across this fault before and what causes it it still keeps the correct time. I've recently had to change the ignition switch for a genuine new replacement but this fault was there before thanks for any help you can give.

All digital displays eventually deteriorate and fail, Richard. I did read somewhere once something about a simple way of refurbishing them, it might have been rubbing the screen surface with a magnet perhaps, can't really remember, but might be worth an internet search in case something comes up?

From my own experience with at least two cars I've had, the display failure has been the main reason for replacing "original" equipment.
