Hi I've got a e39 523 se 1998 the time clock on the original radio has recently started going blank every now and then I've discovered the only way to get it back on is to turn the ignition off and back on I was wondering if anyone has come across this fault before and what causes it it still keeps the correct time. I've recently had to change the ignition switch for a genuine new replacement but this fault was there before thanks for any help you can give.

hi sorry to have to ask for your help again but i've got a problem with the radio in my 523 r reg e39 its got a dash mounted cd player and autochanger in the boot it all works fine except occasionally the display on the radio goes blank and at the same time non of the radio buttons will work the only way to get it back is turn the set off and back on and its ok for a few minuets again. I assume its the radio its a Phillips part number 65.82-8361346 the only ones I can find second hand are part number 65.82-8361087 it all looks the same except one mine the button on top right says random on the second hand ones that button has 2 arrows on it does anyone know if these sets are interchangeable or if theres anything else I can do to rectify this problem thanks for your help rich

thanks for the help I ve had a diagnostic check today and found its the contacts under drivers seat for the pretensioner cut the plug off soldered and heat shrink the cables together and the light is out thanks again for a great forum

hi thanks for all your help on my previous posts I hope someone might be able to point me in the right direction again. the air bag light on my 1998 523 e39 has come on today it lights up as normal when you turn ignition on it briefly goes out for a split second and then comes back on and stays on it happened just after I moved the drivers seat so I checked the connections to the seat all seems fine ive tried disconnecting the battery hoping that would reset it but no. is there a way to reset or diagnose the system without a proper diagnostic tool are there any common problems on this system thanks for all your help!

just an update ive found by jumping the wires at the fan switch on the o/s top of radiator the fan will work ive also found occasionally it will run when the engines warm and the aircon is on but mostly it doesn't run at all is this normal? every other car ive owned (non of them have been a bmw) when the air con compressors been on the fan has also ran so I don't know if this is a fault or if the air con in the bmw doesn't run the fan very often sorry for all the questions but im new to bmw,s and not sure whats normal thanks very much for any help you can give me rich

thanks for that but unfortunately ive just checked that fuse as you showed and its fine anyone got any other ideas as why the fan isn't working please!!!!!

sorry to have to ask for your help again I ve had a problem with the air con fan it was seized I ve fitted a brand new one this morning the air con has been checked and gas etc all ok but the fan still will not run I assume the old fan has blown a fuse or something ive checked all fuses above glove box also the ones in the boot I found a box under the nearside pollen filter theres relays in there but no fuses any ideas are there any other fuses or where is the relay for the fan any help is very much appreciated by the way its an r reg 523 se 2.5 petrol

hi I was wondering if anyone knows if the m sport 3 spoke steering wheel and airbag off a z3 etc would fit on my car thanks for your help

just to say thanks very much for all your help I bought a wire today and fitted it light gone out all working fine thanks for a gret forum keep up the good work

just an update I just had a quick look and found the garage I bought it off has put a new set of front brake pads on but not fitted a wear indicator wire the connector on the cars wiring loom is hanging down I ll see if I can get one tomorrow and hopefully that will do it thanks for your help you've put my mind at rest lol hate warning lights on

yes its got the symbol of the car and shows if a door or boot is open thanks for your reply I ll have a look at the pads asap

hi im a newbie and thanks for a great forum I hope you can help ive just bought a 523 1997 r reg its an e39 I have a warning light on dash all the time I think its the low brake fluid light its red and an exclamation mark in brackets ive checked the brake fluid buts its full and the wires are plugged in to the top of the sensor on the fluid reservoir is there any other levels etc on this light or anyway of testing the wiring etc thanks for all your help by the way the light was working normally a week ago when I test drove it but today its on all the time the ignitions on I notice the handbrake on warning light is a red p in brackets and that works as it should thanks for any help rich
