Hi, the handbrake on my 2000 320D is less than useless. I've had all new handbrake parts at the back end fitted and the garage adjusted it as much as possible. Can it be adjusted at the handbrake lever end, if so, how ? A friend mentioned that there's a piece of metal near the lever which effectively stretches and needs to be replaced, is this true and if so could this be the problem ?

How are the cables? If its like mine was, it splits into two over the centre-rear of the exhaust, there is an adjuster there and the collars often fail near the rear-end!

Sorry for the late reply. Problem now solved. It was at the handbrake lever end. Lifted the leather lever cover and could see two screwthreads that I presumed connected to the two cables that you mention. Each screw thread had a nut that could be adjusted and seemed to be slack, trouble was that although I could get a spanner to the nuts there was no room to move the spanner and adjust the tension on the cable. This meant that I had to remove (almost remove) the centre console in order to get access to the nuts. Found a helpful video on YouTube on how best to do this, should anyone want to they can watch it on

. Handbrake now working on 4 clicks and holding fine, a bit creaky though.
