Julian Pasiut started following 4 Series Convertible - water collection in sills issue !
-
Hi all, I have owned my 420D convertible for almost two years now and I am really pleased with her combination of performance and economy. However, two months ago I had trouble lowering the rear nearside window - it would not glide down smoothly but only operated in repeated pressing of the window winder button. Even when fully down I found the retractable roof would not fully open. My local BMW specialist garage advised that the problem was that the window winder mechanism on the nearside had failed due to being 'wetted-out' by water ingress to the sill from normal rainfall/washing. Apparently the sill does not have a means of draining away on the 4 Series convertible and eventually it 'floods' the window winder mechanism which sits in this area. My garage stated that this is a common problem on the convertible and they have rectified many of these cars by making a simple drain themselves. I paid £600 for the new winder and labour so was not happy but imagine my horror to experience the offside 'fail' as well ! I have now paid out @£1200 to deal with a 'common knowledge' issue that should have been subject of a simple recall to rectify. I have started an investigation with BMW UK and my local BMW Stratstone dealer to investigate this issue with a view to receiving some recompence for an obvious design fault. My question is, are there any other people/garages 'out there' who have experienced this issue with the 4 Series convertible so that we may form a group to petition BMW for financial retribution ? (I have noted several comments/pictures/videos on Google and Youtube so I know I am not the only one !!). Please feel free to contact me via this post or via my email at [email protected] Thank you !!!

I'm sorry to hear this, I cant even imagine the stress that would put you and the family under. It's wrong and it shouldn't be allowed to continue, it seems garages can walk away scott free doing this. From a buying point of view it doesn't look like you have much security only "luck" that a car is genuine from the previous owners. I am currently speaking with the BMW group, I have reported this to trading standards also (uk ecc) I hope somebody see's the forum and see's the car for what it is.

The X's have a unibody and there are not factory mounting point under vehicle. Possibly with some extreme engineering the factory one can be lowered.

Reason for noise was low oil level in the compressor. The noise only started after degassing of the aircon system. Oil topped up and all good now. Thanks folks

Fan is at the back. All done now took 30mins with all work done from the top. Cost of a new fan complete with surround was Euro 260.Thanks for the replies

Hi Muriel Welcome to the Forum We have seen this here before, BMW say it is caused by condensation in the exhaust at initial start vapour is caused when the exhaust is hot no issue? One guy in Ireland spent a fortune trying to fix it check out the posts if you haven't already Hope this helps Dave

Morning Jay Welcome to the Forum I have read that Hybrids have very restricted towing capacity so my first thought is I doubt that it will fit. You really need to talk to a Specialist supplier or your Dealer (though the Dealer may not be much help if your planning DIY) From memory BMW OEM suppliers were/are Oris and Westfalia Good Luck Dave

Hi all, just an update to my previous post. Finally resolved my problem, with no help from BMW…… Had to replace the generator/starter/alternator unit to sort the problem, having 1st replaced the 48v battery to eliminate that from being the problem, which it wasn’t. So just over 3 years old, less than 70k on the clock and the MHEV system started breaking down. As time went on the issue got worse and resulted in numerous unexpected ‘shut downs’ whilst driving and on one occasion a complete electrical failure due to a flat 12v battery which wasn’t being charged. Lesson from that episode was that I constantly charged the battery when not in use to avoid a si,liar situation…. Hearing more and more people with the same problem and BMW parts confirming they are getting numerous enquiries every week for the component, so clearly BMW have a longevity issue with the system. Going to be a lot of unhappy customers. BMW of course denied there was an issue , weren’t willing to resolve the problem and instead said ‘take it to a main dealer have them identify the problem and if clearly a BMW design or manufacturing problem, they might consider a contribution to the cost’. I could see running up a huge bill at main dealer rates and then getting a minor contribution from BMW if I was lucky so opted to get it fixed by my local independent who was excellent with it. Fortunately, the vehicle was fixed and drove like a dream again, I forgot how good it was! But as the title says MHEV owners beware!1

Morning Jefferey Welcome to the Forum There are no lowering side steps that I am aware of for any of the X models Maybe one of the companies who adapt cars for the disabled may have something but I doubt it will be an easy fix Dave

My wife is short and needs side steps to get in. I checked with the dealer and I've looked for after market. The only ones avaliable extend the factory panel out and they don't lower the sill. I ordered the car and the factory side steps only extend the sill not not lower it. Has anyone else found anything?

I had a similar experience with bmw dealership. … bought an e90 m sport for a large amount. it failed to start after a month, it went back in and they found it had been crashed and repaired, only found it due to the crushed wiring loom which is why the car stopped working. I handed it back to them and walked away…. Unfortunately I had financed it through my company and I didn’t check the finance had been void…. I found out that bmw finance didn’t know I had returned the car and they persued me through my closed business…sued me without contact and I was declared bankrupt by a court in Nottingham. … I live in Yorkshire…. I only found out when I went to move house and failed a credit check! nearly lost the house and my new family stressed. absolute nightmare and bmw didn’t even reply to me. ….

Just wanting to raise awareness for this car, I travelled from Newcastle to Dundee to purchase this car yesterday. Once we had a look at the car it was evident that the drivers side front and rear has had non-disclosed repairs. The garage played dumb to this and said the managers were now involved etc but it has been listed again this morning. almost a 400 mile round trip and an expense of over £200 for nothing, also awaiting my £100 reservation fee. - The front registration plate had 2 out of 4 screws in it. - black strip below the registration plate on the driver side had white paint on it (poorly masked off when repaired) - registration plate holder had white overspray. - black duct on the driver's side also had areas of white paint. - BMW badge on the bonnet had white paint on it. - Inside the bonnet, the bonnet seal had white paint on it. - Some foam on the inside of the windscreen below the heads-up display (drivers side) hanging out. - HUD was a bit intermittent for showing up. - Driver's side headlight has been opened and re-sealed, not factory sealant (compared to passenger side) - The black diffuser also had an area of white paint on it and a small scuff. - Passenger side rear diffuser there was an area with excessive black paint and orange peel. - White paint on the boot seal. - driver side exhaust was sticking out 20mm+ passed the bumper. - Alloy wheels are all black but usually the alloys that are on, are part black with machined faces - driver's side wheel arch, behind the spring you could see the white chassis which looked like it had a spray of oil on it (potentially a burst shock absorber) https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/2...2-3fa4f9f467ce

Hi David S, apologies for late reply only just seen your post. Yep finally sorted the problem but took a long time to resolve, in fact didn’t finally resolve it until the end of Feb. BMW offered no help whatsoever other than telling me to take it to a main dealer and depending on what they find they might offer some assistance…. and clearly having resolved it, it’s demonstrated to be a BMW quality issue. I just wasn’t prepared to take it to a dealer with their labour rates in the hope that BMW might make a contribution. To finally sort the problem, I had to replace the Alternator/Generator/Starter combined component which was defective. Replacement cost at my local independent was just shy of £2k parts and labour. Problem was to get to that point I had to eliminate the 48v battery being defective. Cost of that was probably going be about £1200 plus fitting, pretty fiddly as it’s connected to the coolant system. I managed to find one on eBay for £200 off a pretty new low mileage X5 (so was pretty confident it would be ok) and had it fitted at my independent. No change to the problem, leaving it down to the generator/alternator/starter. Did think about getting one of those from eBay but decided against it. Having replaced the parts, the car is like new and drove as it always did! in the period trying to resolve the problem, the issues did get worse. The heated rear view window, heated seats and heated mirrors stopped working (ok now, but not great in the winter….) and the car sounded like a ‘bag of spanner’s’ at idle, well I say idle, it was ‘racing’ rather than idling. I also ensured I kept the normal battery fully topped up as I did experience a complete electrical shutdown whilst out one day as the battery wasn’t being charged correctly due to the generator issue. Thought it was one of the usual shut down episodes, but instead of being a simple ‘push the start button’ fixes, the whole car was dead, luckily I had managed to cruise into a laybye. When my independent rang bmw parts, they identified that they were getting a lot of enquiries each week for the generator component, so clearly a big problem for BMW.!! Which of course BMW denied when I told them. Hope this helps and you get it sorted, it might not be the same issue as mine, but I bet it is! My independent has had an X3 in with the same problem since he did mine. Bit of a heads up, I did struggle to find garages willing to take on the repairs (even so called BMW specialists) so might need a bit of looking for. If you’re pretty handy, it’s probably something you could do yourself but it’s pretty fiddly and takes a bit of time I understand. Not sure where you’re based, but I still have my original battery if you wanted to eliminate the battery. If you want any further info just let me know. It’s something BMW need to wake up to because I can see there being a lot of very unhappy owners around!! Cheers

Morning Aaron Welcome to the Forum You say you changed the bulb for the "Correct one" so you brought it from a BMW Dealer ? If not then it is possible that you have the correct type of bulb but if it is LED it may not have a ballast resistor fitted. If the bulb is correct then check carefully the wiring in particular the Earth Good Luck Dave

Check for continuity between the live at the switch and the fuse. Check the earth from the switch to the main body. you should have 12 v at the switch plug with the engine running. The wiring loom runs through the door near the hinges and can sometimes become brittle. if there is no power at the switch, make a + and - wire from a 12v battery to the switch terminals and see if the switch works. That will confirm the loom issue.
