  1. After servicing my E36 323i auto ive seen a huge increase in fuel economy which really does go to show that maintenance pays. Before Town driving = 19mpg Town and rural roads = 26mpg Motorway - 32mpg After Town driving = 24mpg Town and rural roads = 34mpg Motorway = 45mpg She feels quicker as well.
  2. Got snow here now but my BMW is not going anywhere. There's quite a steep hill to get off my estate and there is not a hope that the BMW will get up it without winter tyres. The pickup on the other hand is earning its keep today.
  3. On average im getting 25mpg locally pushing up to to mid 30s on a long run. I love the car im just loking for a way to reduce my overheads. Im running a newly started mmobile mechanics business so anything that reduces overheads needs to be considered. My parents converted their 4.2l range rover and roughly halved the running costs
  4. Im currently using my E36 323i touring as my works vehicle. I have been considering an lpg kit as an option to reduce he fuel bill. Has anyone here had a conversion done on an one of these and in your opinion was it worth doing
  5. Ive just done my first long journey in my 1998 323i touring. Due to awfull weather conditions the going leg of the trip which was the full length of the M4 was done at 50mph. She returned an average of 35mpg this included about 25 miles of town driving whilst I was in Buckinghamshire and the very twisty and hilly roads this end of the M4. On the way back I discovered I can record to MPGs using the trip computer so had a play and discovered that the motorway section done at 70mph returned an average fuel consumption of 42mpg. Now im certianlly not complaining about these figures they are far better than I expected but they do seem a little high and it makes me wonder if this may indicate a problem, as this car is fitted with a 2.5 6 cylinder and a 5 speed slush box. Mind I was watching that fuel consumption gauge like a hawk and would back of every time it dropped and didn't let it climb above 2250rpm that entire journey
  6. As the title says really I want to fit a leather interior in my E36 touring.
  7. the photos I posted first were the ebay photos posted by the man I bought it from. Since then I have taken some of my own. I want to put a leather interior in it but unfortunatly E36 touring ones don't seem very easy to find, does anyone know if E46 touring seats will fit. I want leather for its wipe down quality as with my proffesion cloth seats will quickly get ruined so part leather is not an option
  8. The computer on my 323 is saying 24.1mpg. I can't really say what im getting though as ive only put petrol in it once so most of that will be what the previous owner was getting. I can keep the economy needle around 30mpg if I drive carefully though
  9. Ouch is that holding the bulb in or holding the whole light unit in. If the latter I think id be tempted to apply some very expensive gaffer tape to it ;)
  10. Well I must say thank you very much. Originally Adrian Flux quoted me £3900 but informed me that they had contact with a company that might be able to do a lot better because of the fact that I have been driving motability cars incident free for 5 years. Anyway I was transferred over and all the details added so I didn't have to go through them again I have had a quote of £1326 and when your 23 and have no official NCB that is nothing to sniff at. That quote is on a 1998 E36 323i Touring fully comprehensive with class one business use. So a saving of wait for it £2574!! I can scaresly believe it!
  11. Thanks for the welcome, I must say what they say about BMWs being real drivers car is certianlly true about this one it certianlly is lovely to drive and a lot faster than im used too. Although saying that the other cars im used to driving are not really that comparable. 2011 french poo Scenic (horrid bland and boring to drive) 1999 VW Caddy NA diesel (Slower than a snail) 1967 DAF 44 (rubber bands, 844cc, and 34hp need I say anymore) 1967 Triumph 1300 (not fast but lovely to drive)
  12. I want to read the fault code on my e36 to discover why the SRS light is on and ideally I want to do this tomorrow morning as a friend is borrowing the car for a couple of weeks tomorrow afternoon. I do have a diagnostics scanner, 2 in fact one of which even has the BMW logo on the box, but I am aware that BMWs of this era don't use the now near enough standard OBDII diagnostics socket and I don't have the right adapter. I was thinking if I new which pin on the car to connect to which pin of the OBDII reader I could make up an adapter in a few minutes from the endless pile of wiring offcuts in the workshop. That would hopefully allow me to read the code tomorrow rather than waiting for postage on the correct adapter. Another quick question that may save me some hunting time tomorrow, where is the diagnostics socket located on a 1999 323 touring?
  13. Not had any bad comments when in a BMW but people never let you out at junctions. I get far worse when im in my DAF 44, which is now a very very rare car, only 2 mk1s remain on UK roads and I regularly get told to crush it and get rid of the last one in Wales, which I find very unfair its a great little car and always puts a smile on my face and it really pees of the saxo brigade in that it can get away from the lights quicker than them without even trying. My 323 on the other hand I just get looks, they must thing im a colourblind drug dealer or something, (its a sort of purpley grey colour)
  14. Hi I have a problem with insurance and am hoping that you may be able to help. Although I have been driving claim free for 5 years and have had a car insured in my name for at least 3 of those I don't have any no-claims. The reason for this is I have been driving a 1967 Triumph 1300 and a 1973 DAF 44 and they have been insured on a classic car policy that didn't offer no claims. Now that I am looking to insure my E36 323i most insurers wont even quote as I I don't have any no claims. I hope you can help also do you do those black boxes that record driving style as if you do I would certianlly be happy to have one fitted. I am also a mobile mechanic and this issue is also stopping me from being able to get Motor trade insurance which is putting me in more than a bit of a bind!
  15. Hi im new here and recently purchased a 1999 BMW 323i Touring, I had intended to do it up and then sell it on but I must admit I am rather smitten with it. The decision of whether or not to keep it was kind of made for me when my work van overheated badly and blew its HG last week. I wont be fixing it as the amount of jobs that now need doing equate to over the vans value in parts alone. I am a self employed mechanic so labour would not have been an issue regardless. So I decided I should try using my 323 touring for work untill I can afford to buy a decent van but this is also proving difficult as I am 23 in 2 days time and most insurance companies either wont touch it or quote silly figures like £5k a year. Im hoping that the club insurance scheme will cover under 25s as if it does I will most certianlly be joining. Have some photos of my 323.
