sounds like the changer is not connected to the stereo maybe a break in the cable or simply come off at either the stereo end or the changer end, also best place to look for kits is the good ole E Bay

Always used remus exhausts myself but was years ago but they used to have a lovely deep note to them plus helped the bhp.

i am sure petrol in a deisel is not as bad as deisel in a petrol....it should burn off and make the insides nice and clean....lol
