  1. When to change? Has this time come for me to replace my trusty old E39 with a more rounded younger model? It starts every morning, it doesn’t really rattle nor smoke however I know it will need welding on one sill for the next MOT, the Air bag light is on, it is rusty in the typical fuel flap area. All these faults are easy fix, However after 300,000 miles of looking out of the same stone chip windshield……….maybe I should retire the old girl(and add it to the barn) and fancy a change? This now raises a question, E39 or E60, I won`t spend more than 7K on a daily runner, Judging by the E39 impeccable service I will run the next car for 8 or so years( so about the same mileage) So 7k seems to buy the Very best of the E39 sport range or quite a good selection of mid miles early E60. What is everyone view on both models?
  2. Agree with all of the above, I have seen a couple of B3`s which have all the kit and a single sticker on the door shut, yet no official plate or on the rocker cover, If you didn’t want it added then the dealer would be more than happy to remove/not add them, Get some photos up and we should help on the ID
  3. Dabsy is right, the X3 X6 and X1 never will sell in loads because it is not an established market, However for the job that they do which is a small compact 4wd it’s a cracking little car. I have driven a couple and it was a pleasant place to be
  4. Welcome, smart looking car! I presume you have put more than 1 gallon of fuel in it? If so change your fuel filter as I would put money on it being a bit blocked up. The bonnet catch wise I guess will be the spring has made an escape
  5. Mike, what do you get out MPG wise out of a 535d?
  6. If you really wanna bugger up the ride, put run flats on it! Worse thing I ever did to the E39, Personally they are not to my taste, however I have seen MUCH worse. However I feel now you have got used to the car on 19`s, fitting smaller wheels would look tiny
  7. IF im honest about the same, We used to tow a 2500kg Dastle race box with my a 3.0d X5 and we rarely saw 20mpg although it was very very stable even with a car in the back on the Alps, so i dont think an improvement in MPG can be used as a reason, As prestige indercates, fantastic motor very well built and just plough on and on and on and on. IMO better built than the lexus and the Porsche(which is our current tow car), and the range rover will just break down!
  8. Agreed, well known in the right circles and i personally have never heared a bad word about them, They faffed around with my M52 engine ECU a while back and its was a real improvement, Whatever you do, do not go for a cheap of the shelf map!, it needs to be done one a rolling road to be 100%
  9. Drums are perfectly acceptable however this is your car and this site is here to help people with there cars, so Well if you wish to do it, down the scrap yard and take of the bottom two arms from a 318, but a new set of brake hoses and enjoy a few hours of swearing, it is straight forward in that respect. Do your wheels show the drums then?
  10. Welcome to the forum please do not be offended by the following comment WHY? There is next to no performance benefit in doing this(most of the braking effort goes to the front wheels). You would have to swap the rear hubs which could be brought from a scrappy for not a lot of money, although I am not sure if there is a bias value on the e36 and if so if it is different from disk and drums. Personally I wouldn’t bother its a lot of work for very very little gain.
  11. Petrol`s don’t swallow their swirl flaps(can be removed for £200), do not have any turbo problems Do not have injector problems You will buy a better spec/year/mileage petrol car for the same money as a diesel, and I would argue the mileage thing, some many variables when it comes to reliability. Look after the car, it will look after you. Diesel have come a huge way in the last 10 years, however in my eyes 4 cylinder diesel are just too loud for my liking. However it is each to their own
