  1. HI all, 2006 650i convertible. Seems to have an intermittent issue with starting. The battery appears to be ok as car clock is staying on time and not falling out but when I have tried to start the car the engine would not crank over, implying insufficient amps. However, the engine then did crank over and start up the next morning. Very strange.

Has anyone experienced this and identified the source of the problem. It could be something simple e.g. I need to give battery terminals a good clean, they are tight on, or there is something else awry

    Any thoughts/advice gratefully received.

    Morning Paul

I am not sure where the Washer reservoir is on your model but from memory it is tucked away behind the bumper  or under the wing. Either way you have to take a wheel liner out to reach it.

Your problem I believe is a build up of a jelly like sludge in the pump filter. The filter is on the end of the pump and easy to clean by washing it out, the down side is if the washer tank is full you need something to catch it in. BMW recommend their own Washer fluid the only difference is it has a anti-fungicide in it. There are several on the market just read the back of the bottle (I use Prestone from my local Auto Factors.

Thanks Dave, may have to pay for that service but at least I know where to go look.

    Thanks for taking the time.

  3. Hi all , done some further investigation. So, no water flow to the washer heads so I have a blockage elsewhere, not the heads. Washers to headlights are working when headlights are on so there must either be a blocked pump or filter somewhere in the main line or the washer main pump needs replacing.

I am assuming that the headlights and windscreen washers operate of separate pumps.

I guess I should also check the fuses as well. Always possible one of them has blown.

  4. Hi all, did some reading into the taillight cluster gaskets perishing and allowing water. My E64 is getting older now so thought I would replace them. Has anyone got any links for instruction on how to get the taillight clusters off to do this job. I have a small compartment cover on each side in the boot but cannot see how I can loosen anything that would allow the cluster to come off.

Any advice gratefully received as always.

  5. Hi all, just thought I woudl share something. I was seeing the black vinyl on the e64 rear deck cover turning grey in the sun. Picked up on a great link on You Tube link to Tim, quite an ingenious approach in using Teak Oil to rejuvinate the colour. Just did mine actually with Danish oil, a teak oil variant, and it comes up brilliantly. I have no idea were Tim got the tip from but it works.

  6. Hi all, looks like I have a seal failure as moisture looks like it is in the side panel light on one side of the E64. Where would I find the bulb spec for this light? Are they readily available.

The actual bulb holder may also need to be replaced but cannot find any new, only used. Any pointes on buying new ones as I am suspecting the seal will go on used ones and I then have the same problem.

    Any advice gratefully received.

Not good check realoem.com in the body and trim sections it should allow you to identify where they are. When searching for the leak don't ignore the rear light clusters the seals perish and allow water past over time. I had to remove the clusters and use a thin bead of clear silicone smeared on the cluster seal has cured it (so far)

    Dave

Hey that is a great tip on the rear light cluster seals. How old was your vehicle? Seems like a bit of good practice to follow that.

  8. Hi all, just checking I am not missing anything on this. The BMW badge boot opener on my E64 seems to have lost the spring back action. It still opens the boot but then does'nt return to the flat on release, instead staying depressed. Is this a new part or is there a repair possible.  2006 E64.

  9. Hi Anyone had an issue with my 2006 E64, I am getting light failure alert, parking light but on inspection there is no failure. On  plugging reader in, it is saying a 'supplemental light failure' and that is it.

All lights appear to be on and working including parking lights, if anything daytime angel eyes appear a bit down on power. Maybe that is a clue.

    Appreciate any insights/experience.

  10. Hi Greydog, well it was the LMII so managed to get a direct replacement on line(£50), same number and all the same notations as the original. Slotted it in and off it went. Had a local BMW specialist recode for me (£40) . I have kept the original and will enquire of the two companies you mentioned as far as repair is concerned but learned a lot from the thread. Many thanks.

  11. HI, said I would come back to you  on this subject. So removed the LM unit and gave it a good clean down with circuit board cleaner and a soft toothbrush. Reinstalled and hey presto the fault had cleared. However, next day it was back but day after cleared again. Not convinced it is the LM unit now and could be a lose connection. That is even more concerning. I am thinking about re cleaning it again and all terminals as well but good to see the first clean had an impact. Removing the LM was fiddly but doable, certainly a job for the smaller chap though on the E64. Thanks again for the pointers on this matter.

A job I have done earlier this year on my X5, I have also replaced them on 2 1 series and a 5 series.

BMW will tell you the only fix is a new LCM that can only be coded by them, so will some specialists

Happy to report they are all wrong, you can fit a second hand LCM and code it to your car using BMW PA Soft 1.4.0 or if you dont fancy trying yourself a member with PA Soft would help I am sure. I have a How to already written up.

Check realoem for the correct part number for your car (mine was LCM III I upgraded to LCM IV more functions) Once you know what is in there either by pulling it out or using realoem Google search a replacement. My LCM IV came from Quarry Motors cost £90 delivered in 3 days fitted and programmed in under an hour. If you don't program it straight away everything will work but there will be a tamper dot by your mileage. Don't panic because as soon as it is programmed it will disappear.

Cheers Dave, always great to share experience like that. Certainly worth having a crack at and I'll also report back on the clean story I got from the MSBoard.com community as well.

  13. After many years running my E64 650i, turned on this morning to be advised that the whole lighting system was inoperative, indicators, lights, brake lights etc. Did a search and found some references to problems with the light control module. Also some experience in cleaning it off to remove dust and maybe light corrosion and then being able to replace it. Any experience on this in the group?

  14. all good discussion points. Ive seen some of the vintage voltage progs as well and they do seem to undertake a lot of work in addition to the electric conversion. For me range is really not the challenge so at some point it is stick with the best looking convertible in the world and convert it or buy electric. More to follow me thinks....... As to the V8 growl, well Lexus are using synthetic noise so I am guessing this is a simple add on to any conversion!! Crazy.

  15. Anyone got into conversions?. Im not doing big trips in the 650i  and wondered what a reasonable conversion would cost and what to expect.  Just started doing some sums and thought if I dont need greater than say 150 miles range in any one trip then might a conversion be worth considering?

    Appreciate your thoughts.
