316i engine noise

good morning one and all, I have a 316i that makes a kind of humming noise when running, its like a high pitched sound but as soon as I turn off the engine it stops immeadiately, any ideas. thanks...john

    welcome to the forum, mine makes a similar kind of noise.... ran solidly for 12 months now. My bet is wearing on a pump somewhere.... I'll find out when it fails lol

    Hello again, thanks for the replies, it is not a fan belt noise, it sounds like its coming from the top of the engine where the injectors are (in that area)I was visiting my brother -in -law yesterday who worked on engins years ago but as so as he popped the bonnet the noise stopped, quite uncanny, but on my way home it started again.

    doubt it but are you sure somthing is not touching which shouldnt be when the bonnet is down?

    heatshield etc?

    perhaps the bonnet catch is vibrating against metal, or the bonnet hinges are loose.

    Lubraicate all of these areas with white grease to eliminate
