650i crank no start

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a 2008 650i with a crank no start problem. There is no spark or fuel. The fuel rail is pressurized but injectors are not firing. I replaced the ivm cause it will cause a similar no start but nothing changed. I checked relays but couldn't find one for fuel Injection or spark. I couldn't see codes cause my reader was having a hard time connect. But there was rpm when cranking so I assume the cps is fine. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Afternoon Hans

Welcome to the Forum

I would start with a Diagnostic Scan but then I do have ISTA/INPA on my lap top.

Without it I would start by testing the sensors that will effect fuel and spark. Number one Crank position sensor if it is faulty no signal to the DME no signal to the injectors. While testing sensors Fuel Pressure sensor next, while the fuel rail is pressurised is it correct if the pressure sensor is dead the DME will assume no fuel present. Also carefully check the loom to injectors and coil packs not unknown for it to be damaged. Try a Google search for test parameters for the sensors. Also check engine earth straps

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply Dave.

This car is over 5 hours away from me so thr next trip I make needs to be the one I take it home haha. The obf2 I'm using is an mhd tuner off of my 135i with protool. I got it to connect once but stupidly disconnected it. The only code it was throwing was a immobilizer I don't remember which one. Also the conditions of the car breaking down were while driving happened 3 times than didn't start again, at least that's what I was told. So my assumption was a bmw system that controlled efi and spark ignition. As far as the cps if I was reading rpm while cranking would that not rule it out. It also did not throw a code for it when I had it connected. But I couldn't read actual position data since i couldn't connect. The owner replaced the fuel pump in an attempt to get it running so I know the pressure us there but there is absolutely no fuel coming out the cylinders or onto spark plugs. I luckily found a complete part out car 10 miles away from it. So a list of potential problems I could try would be much appreciated.

Thanks Hans

Morning Hans

Having a Parts car close by is a major win (providing it hasn't got the same issue 😁)

The rev counter gets a signal from the DDE which gets signals from the CPS FPS and Cam sensors the sensor only needs to be loose or a degree out, Test it and or change it (but test the replacement first)

As you're so far away I would either get the car transported (my preference), or go ready for anything. That means at least 1 fully charged battery/booster pack. Start with a full scan (INPA/ISTA will show all faults for each system) check all sensors MAF, MAP, TBPS, FPS, CPS. Cam sensors test continuity on the loom for coil packs and injectors. Check/change the fuel pump relay.

From your description you say no fuel or spark, all the above will have an effect there. If all those are OK then you are back to the

Hope this helps

As an after thought make sure the fuel filter isn't clogged. Plus check out the EWS fault you half saw

Good morning Dave

Thanks for the reply, towing it isn't in my best interest I would like to get it running. And the parts car runs it just has no title which is why it's a part out car, which is good for me.

I did a little research on the ews immobilizer code I got and that seems to be where my problem lies. Considering it ran one minute and not the next, and it's the code it's throwing. As both fuel and spark systems stopped working. I will check all the sensors as well I know bmws can be weird if they aren't getting signals from maf or others. My 135i was a similar case to this one and it was just a maf sensor.

I opened the Schrader valve and tested fuel pressure it had plenty of pressure and flow. I don't know why that would knock out spark too though.

I'm just not really sure how to fix the ews fault there isn't a ton of support for this car. I had a hard time even finding a fuse diagram. I am going this Friday to try again so any help with fixing that code would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Morning Hans

If the fault is EWS or CAS related I think you need to read up on resetting/resyncing the Key/EWS/CAS or if your diagnostics are up to it re-programming them. As you have a donor nearby maybe take the EWS and Keys ?

Fingers crossed it is fairly simple and a reset works
