Good morning Bimmers.

I have just (a week) bought an 2015 X3 diesel auto that has done 82,000 miles, and I have noticed a smell of  exhaust fumes in the cab, particularly on starting from cold, but also throughout the ride. During relatively short journeys, I can taste the fumes on my lips and yesterday, as I drove 20-30 miles, I started to feel my eyes becoming 'sore and prickly'.

It's not major, but is definitely there.

Looking at the excellent service history, a 'Exhaust gas recirculation cooler' was replace  a month ago by a local BMW dealership.

I am not 'Technical' but this is worrying me.

Do you guys (gals) have any thoughts please, apart from warning a gas mask?

The dealer appears sympathetic, and has asked me to 'drop in' so that he can assess the situation, (but cannot fit in any work for 3 weeks!) but I want to be aware of any points you think I should know?

Forewarned is forearmed!

Morning Kevin

Welcome to the Forum

No an Exhaust smell in the cabin is just not right

You say the EGR cooler was replaced at a BMW Dealer do you know if this was a Recall or Warranty work ?

I have read of issues where the EGR to exhaust gasket was missed it isn't difficult to check yourself if you are that way inclined (Picture Attached) if not phone a friend 😅 the gasket (compression type) should go between the shiny bit on the right and the rusty bit on the left.

I hope this helps

Dave

PS The picture shows one with the gasket missing

Thank you Dave.

That indeed sounds like a good place to start. I will try and have a look.

I also (now that I am in panic mode and reading everything!) saw a 'recommendation' on the last ' Service' that a 'Exhaust clamp exhaust flexi cracked-advise new clamp' was stated. This was done by the local BMW agent in Hungerford.

The things seems doomed to failure!

Don't despair I changed the DPF exhaust clamp on my X5 3.0d last year Genuine replacement was £22 fitting took me 1/2 hour and I am old and not as bendy as I used to be 🤣

Any Exhaust specialist should be able to help even if it is a complete replacement flexi section
