BMW 220d F46 - Turbo Actuator failure - due to Diesel?

Hi, need some urgent  help please ...

BMW 2016 220d F46, have extended warranty. Got drivetrain warning and car not picking speed fast.

BMW dealership found that the Turbo Actuator is faulty, warranty company asked Turbo specialists report. 
Turbo specialists found that Actuator failure and it had diesel inside suggesting that Fuel injector might be leaking diesel over the wiring. Warranty company denied the claim.

Asked BMW to investigate further, according to them the fuel injector is fine and the wiring loom (they unplugged it) is completely clean and no trace of diesel. So there is no mechanical issue with the car.

BMW quoted 2300 GBP PLUS labour for the Turbo replacement. The Turbo specialist can provide Garrett Turbocharger for 1161 GBP. BMW can install that turbo but then I have to sign some document to say that they will not be covering any further issues with the Turbo.

Now I have few questions:

- Is getting Garrett turbo and installed by BMW will be good approach? Means non BMW approved Turbos are still of good quality?
- If BMW can't find any issues then why it failed? And the new one can fail too due to same issue?
- Get the Turbo installed by the BMW, take the car and then take it to some other garage to diagnose the problem? If they can find something then I can go back to warranty company that if the other issue is covered then turbo should be paid for by them too. 

Please suggest what I can do now?

Oh dear bit of a Saga 

First your questions 

1. BMW do not make Turbos they buy them in, as a Company BMW do not repair anything they simply change New part for Old at the Clients expense hence the ££££ cost. As BMW found no sign of leaks to the loom I would challenge the Warranty Company as it is not an Injector fault

2. Garrett are one of the oldest turbo manufacturers ( around since the early 50's) they have been around longer than BMW have been fitting turbos to their cars? So a Garrett Turbo is at least as good (possibly better) as OEM quality depending on it's source. As your Warranty is not in place I would get a good independent to change the turbo or at least its actuator BMW have washed their hands anyway

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply. First the problem is Car is at BMW and undriveable right now so either BMW (Bristol) put the old broken Turbo back (which is currently in Northampton with a Turbo specialist) OR install some other Turbo (either their OR I buy one for them) but then if its not BMW approved then BMW will no cover any warranty for it.

The current warranty is extended one from Assurant and according to them its not covered as Turbo is broken (actuator which can't be replaced on its own) due to diesel going in. And if BMW can find a reason for this which warranty company accepts then they can reassess the claim. And BMW can't find any reason for how this happened.

I am not sure what to do now. My Car is with BMW for almost 3-weeks now and the loan car they gave me, since last week they are charging me per day for it.

Personally I would ask the Turbo specialist if they can rebuild the turbo (which they will normally give a warranty) if they can't rebuild it then buy a Turbo it will very likely come with a warrantee of it's own.

My own X5 E70 was brought at a silly low spares or repair price due to Turbo issues I fitted a Rebuilt Turbo (cost £460 with fitting kit) along with a New actuator that lot was purchased with a 2 year Warranty, 4 years and 30k later still going strong 

So as BMW are unprepared to give you any support why give them your money?? I would move the car to an Independent Garage also get the original Turbo back (why Northampton ?) If you talked to someone like GAP Turbo Chargers in Bristol I am sure they will collect your car fix it for a sensible cost and you will have a Warranted repair that will be supported.

That would be my course of action for what it is worth

There are no Turbo specialist in Bristol, so the part went to one in Northampton.

The GAP turbo Bristol is just written on their website but they are located in Midlands/Birmingham.

I had to give BMW approval to go ahead for replacement as the cost of loan car, plus paying them for labour should be done but then saving of £900 on non-BMW approved turbo will go  towards the hassle of finding and paying some other garage to collect the car and then pay labour/collection costs to them too.

      Folding mirrors

      Morning Damion I would say yes to the software update (but a Dealer will charge £££) this should be in iDrive try My Vehicle, Vehicle Settings, Doors/Key, then scroll down to mirrors and check Fold Mirrors when Locked If that doesn't work you need help from someone with a BMW capable diagnostic package (ISTA/INPA) to check if it is in a hidden menu. Be aware BMW are making it harder and harder to tinker with the cars mainly after 2019 year so you should be OK Dave

      Centre console iPhone charger

      Morning Rob His was in the car when he brought it and is OEM (car is BMW 330e 2019) apparently works well with his iPhone but not with our daughters Android phone. You could talk to your Dealer but make sure your wallet is in a protected spot 😁 as I have know idea of cost ££££. If BMW are fitting them then there will be Retro fit kits out there from the Far east so worth looking at the Auction sites but I have no knowledge of quality other than the screen in the X5 failed and I replaced it with a complete Android unit from Ebay at less than a 1/3rd of the BMW quote. Truly plug and play allows switching between the OEM CiC and Android gives better GPS and many other programs and has been totally reliable for the last 3 years (that's killed it ) Me I don't spend long enough in the car for my phone to need charging these days 😅 While the X5 has Android Auto and Carplay I have to say like a lot of gadgets they are rarely used. Bluetooth is the only thing I see as an essential Good Luck with the search for a solution Dave

      Folding mirrors

      My X6M has folding mirrors, operated from the normal button, situated on the drivers door arm rest. They don’t fold in when I set the alarm, having read the manual, there’s a setting in the idrive to activate this function but when I scroll down the menu, this option isn’t there. Can the software be updated to add this feature, surely if the button is there and the mirrors are folding ones there must be a solution, or am I missing something completely Thanks in advance
