Haven’t mastered yet how to reply to your reply on this site - but your response has been extremely helpful and coincides almost exactly with a friend of a friends answer. d*ck Lovett still negotiating with BMW customer service and seeking a 100% cost recovery for me. It would be interesting and embarrassing for them if they do not come up with goods and the alternatives suggested solve the problem.

Will update again in due course.

    An absolute pleasure and I hope it works out in your favour. I would definitely be asking how they think such an early failure is acceptable and have they escalated the issue to BMW UK

    Just by chance I have today replaced the hand break actuator for one of my wife's friends X5 E70, she brought a complete new actuator mechanism online for £220 with 5 years warranty. The fiddliest part was routing the new cables all in with plenty of tea an coffee it took this old boy just over 4 hours  in my home garage. 

    I now have a stock of brownie points with my wife and a rather nice bottle of Red
