Pirelli Run Flat Tire Issues?

Recommended Posts

Hello BMW owners!  I have a 2018 X5 that I absolutely love.  This past spring/summer I had two different Pirelli run flat tires come apart, literally, going 80 MPH on the interstate, both causing extensive damage each time to the car.  The car is regularly serviced at BMW dealerships.  The first time I thought it was maybe fluke, but when it happened again I became more concerned.  Fortunately, each time I was able to safely get the car to the side of the road.  However, it could've been tragic had another car been close or had I rolled the car.  Long story short, I filed a claim with Pirelli on the second tire and the tire was mailed to them.  Pirelli came back yesterday that it was a road hazard issue.  There is no way.  I am asking for full documentation.  Has anyone else had this issue with Pirelli tires on their BMW?  They are Pirelli Scorpion Verde. It seems one has to be injured or killed to get their attention.

Morning Paul

Welcome to the Forum

I have seen/read lots of comments about run flat tyres on several Forums but can't remember any about Pirelli specifically, particularly about them delaminating and coming apart 😲

For it to happen once is bad, and I guess we all question ourselves a little "did I check tyre pressure?" "did I run over something?" but twice ?? Was it the same wheel/ corner of the car ?

Good luck with the pursuit of Pirelli

Hello Paul,

Did you ever get anywhere with this issue? I have these tires, and I am wondering if I need to be concerned; since I just got an x5m and I regularly drive long distances.

Thank you,

Lisa

Hi Lisa

Welcome to the Forum

BMW as do other Manufacturers take great care over the tyres chosen as OEM supply and Pirelli are amongst the suppliers chosen if there were any inherent faults (1) it would be well reported and (2) BMW and others would drop them like a brick.

So providing your tyres are correctly inflated and in good order ie; no slice or chunks out of the side wall particularly the inside where they are not seen (pot hole damage) all low profile tyres not just run flats are susceptible to this sort of damage.
