Power steering fluid

Steering has become heavy on my 1987 325 i. I note that the reservoir is down by half.  I don't know what kind of fluid is in there. Is it OK to add anyway, i.e., can fluids be mixed? Thank you.

Welcome to the Forum

I think there should be a label or pressed mark on the reservoir saying use ATF. Most good Auto Factors should be able to supply a compatible top up
