Tapping Noises while in neutral.

Featured Replies

Hello you wonderful people with good taste in cars,

I recently noticed my car making some extra noises while in neutral. It was especially apparent when my car was pointing down hill.

A little info about my car:  2008 E87 116i Hatchback, Engine N45 with 85,000km.

The gear box, when shifting to 1, to 2 and sometimes 3 is quite stiff or troublesome to get into. nothing ridiculous but its definitely not smooth. (Not entirely sure if this is needed)

While in neutral, there is this tapping noise. If I press the clutch pedal down, it goes away. Not sure if its still there when in gear. It's hard to notice it at first but when you notice it, its hard to not notice it..

Anyway, If anyone knows anything about this please let me know. I'm considering buying an entire new clutch kit and fix up the gear box if I can't find a solution.

Thanks,

Sefy

I had this on my e46. When I pushed the clutch in, the noise went away and it was fine in gear.... it was the thrust bearing on the gearbox.
I had to replace the clutch as the bearing failed and left me stranded.

hopefully it’s not as serious for you.
