one xenon headlight on my 2006 X5 has stopped working. I am in France and the garage here has been unable to trace the fault. Apparently the bulb is ok.

Someone suggested swapping over the "ballast" from the headlight that is working in order to see if this is where the fault lies.  I will now need to instruct my garage, in my very limited French to do this, but I have no idea what the "ballast" is, what it looks like, what it does or where it is actually located. Can anyone enlighten me? (No pun intended). Any other thoughts on what the problem could be, also gratefully received.
