Starting Car Without Key In Ignition Slot (e70)

Hi,

I recently bought an X5 which I don't believe has the comfort access feature. I certainly don't seem able to open the car without using the unlock button on the remote.

However, I discovered today that I don't always need to put the remote in the ignition lock to start the engine. After finishing a journey I turned the engine off and removed the remote. I then realised I had forgotten to drop something off so I restarted the engine but then realised I hadn't put the remote back in??? I'm just surprised it started without the remote being in the ignition lock.

Is this normal?
