Running Rough

I have recently bought a 1998 BMW 318. It runs but struggles to tick over.

It judders and stalls. The only solution is to keep the revs over 2k. Anything under 2k and it starts to judder and sounds rough as a badgers ##### as the revs fluctuate.

It also feels a bit flat on acceleration.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have u had the dizzy checked? I've had similar issues, I've had a new dizzy and I've adjusted the tick over by turning the unit. This helped somewhat but only by fitting a new air flow meter have I seemed to solved the problem, but it's an on going concern that I'm working through, trying one thing at a time

welcome to the forum - -_-

there could be numerous of things causing your faults. you could start by checking the sparks ignition. check spark plugs, leads etc.

No mechanical distributor in a car of this age. Coil packs.

I would begin with looking to the ICV as it may be struggling to maintain a steady idle with the air it is letting in at those speeds.

May also be worth checking that MAF mate. It is part responsible for the fueling. Unplug it and the car SHOULD guess the fueling and often it's better at guessing than it is when it has faulty readings.

As dilly said, check ignition. There should be leads traveling from the coil (black plastic box on the left hand side) check they ain't knackered.
