Since I had an intermittent DSC light on my car I bought the C110 V3.6 Code Reader for X5. The tool is well built with a sturdy cable, solid OBDII connector, an easy to read display and has a nice protective carrying case. The price was less than just one trip to the local mechanic shop to have the codes read.

So far it helped me successfully clear trouble codes, displays live data stream, component testing...I am still working on it.

The only pity is that it the manual was not very thorough so I found a video guide which makes operation more easier.

You can also use a 1.4.0 scanner with your lap top and read and reset codes plus set Auto locking, lighting, mirrors and many other functions.
